Various employment opportunities are available at Mount Washington Observatory, both on and off the mountain. Our staffed facilities include our legendary weather station and Mount Washington Museum on the summit of Mount Washington, and our Weather Discovery Center museum and administrative offices in downtown North Conway.
Summit positions require an eight-day shift on the mountain followed by six days off, while most valley positions follow a more typical Monday through Friday work week. In addition to full-time staff positions, we often have part-time and seasonal volunteer and/or intern opportunities.
Current openings, if any, are listed below. Thank you for your interest in working with us!
The primary responsibility of the Mount Washington Observatory (MWO) Director of Summit Operations is the operation of the organization's legendary weather research station atop Mount Washington. Additionally, the Director of Summit Operations oversees all transportation and logistics required to travel to and from the summit of Mount Washington as well as the information technology used to run the organization, including on-mountain technology, remote instrument sites and the office technology required to operate the business.
In partnership with the Director of Research, the Director of Summit Operations will execute on-mountain scientific research, conduct product tests, and fulfill research contract obligations. He/She is responsible for the training and scheduling of on-mountain staff, the methods by which weather observations are conducted, and the logistical support required to supply the mountaintop facility. All must be achieved with the safety of on-mountain personnel as a primary consideration
This position is full-time/year-round and is based at the MWO's administrative offices above the Weather Discovery Center in North Conway Village, New Hampshire. While a fair amount of this position's duties are accomplished in the office, the job does require regional travel as well as some evenings and weekends. Generally, the typical work week is 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. However, weekly shift change trips to and from the summit of Mount Washington are required, and schedules for these trips will vary. Overnight stays on Mount Washington may take place frequently and last up to seven nights in a row.
This unique and complex position requires the utmost in flexibility, creativity, ingenuity and dedication. Given the extremely remote location of the weather station, the Director of Summit Operations must be an extremely capable problem-solver, willing to do whatever it takes to tackle operational issues as they arise, often without immediate access to proper supplies or materials. This position requires an individual capable of working in the outdoors, often in extremely adverse conditions. Mount Washington's weather conditions are brutal and dangerous and must be respected at all times.
Finally, the Director of Summit Operations is the primary operational representative for MWO in relationships with its mountain partners, including Mount Washington State Park, Mount Washington Auto Road, Mount Washington Cog Railway, Appalachian Mountain Club, White Mountain National Forest and remote instrumentation site host locations.
