Part-time, seasonal position located at the Mount Washington Observatory Maintenance Garage
The Snowcat Operator/Mechanic facilitates the Observatory's transportation up and down the Mount Washington Auto Road during the winter season (typically October through May) by operating Mount Washington Observatory (MWO) vehicles in a safe and efficient manner. The position is "Part-Time, Seasonal" and under current employment practices is a non-benefit bearing position. The Observatory and all of its facilities and vehicles are non-smoking. Due to safety considerations, the majority of trips up and down the mountain occur during daylight hours.
The principal work location is in the MWO Maintenance Garage, which is located at the base of the Mount Washington Auto Road. However, when projects or operational needs warrant, work may also take place at other Observatory facilities, including the Summit Observatory, or in the field. Significant work time will be spent above treeline.
Duties include some repair and maintenance of Observatory owned vehicles and related equipment. Some 'blading days' may be required to prepare the Auto Road for safe transport may be required as weather conditions dictate. On some occasions the Observatory participates in Search and Rescue operations on the mountain and the Operator/Mechanic may be asked to assist in these efforts.
