Mount Washington Observatory Attention: Summit Staff Main Street P.O. Box 2310 North Conway, New Hampshire 03860-2310 Summit: 603-466-3388 Fax: 603-466-2328 Thank you for inquiring about the Mount Washington Observatory's summit volunteer program. Please take a moment to fill out the questionaire and return it to the observatory using the address on the top of the application. Please also note that there are two basic requisites for volunteers: 1.) You must be a member of the observatory, 2.) You must be at least 21 years of age. If you are not currently a member please take this opportunity to join. The Observatory requires that all new volunteers complete a week of volunteering in the summer before signing up to volunteer for a week in the winter. Volunteering in the summer allows the volunteer to familiarize themselves with the summit facility, and especially the kitchen. The number of guests in the winter outnumber the amount of guests in the summer, therefore there will be less people to cook for your first time volunteering. Volunteers must be able to stay for a full shift. It is important to note that our shift is a week long and runs from Wednesday to Wednesday. On Wednesday, shift change day, the volunteer meets the crew at the Auto Road base in time to depart for the summit at 8:30 am. On the following Wednesday the down-going trip will not depart the summit until after the shift change meeting. Typically you will arrive at the base around 5 pm. The main responsibility of the volunteer is to help out the summit crew for the week, primarily in the kitchen. The volunteer is responsible for cooking dinner for the crew each night (usually 6 - 7 people in the summer). In addition there most likely will be guests staying the night, as we run a few programs which include people staying for one night at the summit facility. Lunch and breakfast preparation for the guests may be required in this case, otherwise the crew prepares breakfast and lunch for themselves. We also expect our volunteers to help out with general clean up, as well as other projects around the observatory (depending upon any special skills you may bring along). Don't worry, there's still plenty of time for you to enjoy other things such as hiking, reading, watching a video or what have you. Please feel free to email the summit volunteer coordinator with any questions or call (603) 466-3388. We will contact you regarding reservations once your questionnaire has been received by the volunteer coordinator. Following scheduling, more detailed information will be sent to you, including an equipment list and release form. We look forward to seeing you on the summit soon! Please print out, complete, and mail or fax to the address above.
