Gear Up #10Sun, Mar 9th 2008“You look wicked awesome!” is what one Kindergartener of East Fairhaven Elementary said after I was all geared up and ready to head to the summit of Mount Washington in the winter.
After we discussed ways of preparing for weather in Fairhaven, MA I then explained what weather was like on Mount Washington. We watched video clips, looked at photographs and learned how to read a thermometer. It was then time for them to help me gear up and prepare for the summit winter weather. I took out my LL Bean pack that was filled with gear, which included a snowsuit, fleece jacket, down jacket, gortex shell, hat, face mask, goggles, glove liners, mittens, wool socks and boots...and more. We checked the weather on Mount Washington and of course it was certainly cold and blustery.
I showed the students all the gear and sure enough they all agreed with me that I would need every single layer for the winter weather on Mount Washington. Well, I geared up and I was ready to go. “You look like a supergirl,” One student said.
The only problem was, I had all this gear on and we were in Massachusetts where it was about 50 degrees F.
The past week I spent time traveling to schools in MA – Fairhaven, Lincoln and Salem. I also made a visit in North Kingstown, RI.
It was a great time meeting new people and also working with some familiar faces. I look forward to visiting you all again in the next year.
