  1. Sturdy boots, well broken in, well waterproofed (gaiters optional).
  2. Socks for above -- wool or synthetic, not cotton.
  3. Sturdy trousers (Wool or synthetic trousers are preferred).
  4. T- Shirt, Polypro undershirt; Wool or synthetic shirts.
  5. Sweater or pile jacket.
  6. Wool or synthetic hat (for cold) and cap (for sun).
  7. Work gloves.
  8. Sunglasses and sunscreen (be optimistic!).
  9. Rain and wind parka and pants (ponchos are marginal).
  10. Lunch and additional snacks.
  11. Water (an additional thermos of a hot drink might hit the spot, too.)
  12. Compass and maps (such as U.S.G.S. maps) of the area.
  13. Flashlight with good batteries and a spare bulb.
  14. Basic first aid kit and repair kit.
  15. Notebook and pencils or pens.
  16. Camera and film.
  17. Geological hammer (if you have one) and goggles.
  18. Small, short handled shovel (such as a G.I. entrenching tool) if you have one.
  19. Loupe (in the range of 7x or so).

Be aware that weather can be very variable; it could be hot and sunny, or it could be cold and rainy - perhaps even with spitting snow. It's best to be prepared for whatever nature might give us!
