White Mountains Geology Workshop

photo

Date: September 20, 2014 (rain date Sep. 27)

Learn about the geology of the White Mountains at this popular autumn geology workshop led by geologist Brian Fowler, retired engineering geologist and a past President and Life Trustee of the Observatory. The workshop explores the glacial geology and climate history of the Presidential Range and the surrounding region.

The workshop begins with an informal classroom presentation and then proceeds to sites of significant geological interest on Mt. Washington and its immediate vicinity. Exact locations are weather-dependent, but may include sites on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, below in Pinkham Notch, and along the lower portions of the Peabody River Valley toward Gorham.

Fowler will introduce participants to the glacial geology of the region, and share findings from his life-long studies of the glaciation and deglaciation of the Presidential Range and northern White Mountain region. He'll help participants discern hidden clues about the glaciers that once covered the area, and explain the climate changes and process of deglaciation that began in the region about 15,000 years ago. Both field techniques and laboratory follow-up will be considered, with a special emphasis on geological fieldwork.

Fowler has extensive practical and research familiarity with the region and has authored more than two dozen peer-reviewed papers and geologic maps concerning its deglaciation. He is also a co-author of the newly published book "The Geology of New Hampshire's White Mountains." He has been long-involved with geological education programs in the White Mountains and has led many similar workshops in the region over the years. His friendly informal style is always well-received and helps make the content of the workshop easily accessible to all levels of experience and training. Past workshop participants have ranged from complete novices to teachers and geological professionals alike.
