Make the Picture: News Photography Under Extreme Conditions

Join members of the Mount Washington Observatory Board of Trustees, management staff and fellow supporters of this important New England non-profit institution for a fantastic fall evening in scenic downtown Portsmouth, NH. The event features an inside look at the work of the Observatory, along with appetizers, cocktails and a tremendous silent auction. Boston Globe photographer Bill Greene will present "Making the Picture: News Photography under Extreme Conditions," a fascinating discussion about the challenges that face news photographers when they are sent to cover extreme weather. All proceeds benefit the Mount Washington Observatory.

About the Speaker

Bill Greene, 52, has been with the Boston Globe as a staff photographer for 23 years. His awards include being named Photographer of the Year twice, in the National Press Photographers Association/Pictures of the Year competition for portfolios shot in 1987 and 1998. He has won Photographer of the Year honors from the Boston Press Photographers Association eleven times. Other honors include the Robert F. Kennedy International Photojournalism Award for his story of the Lost Boys of Sudan, as well as a first place in the World Press competition for his coverage of the Mississippi flood of 1993. He has participated in several "Day in the Life" books in Ireland, Italy and California. His assignments at the Globe have taken him around the world, covering stories ranging from revolutions in Haiti, refugees in Thailand, the Olympics in Seoul, the war in Kosovo, World Series and Super Bowl.
