I am planning a trip for the weekend in late september. What will conditions be like at that time? Also where is a good spot for camping. Thanks

I would count on cold nights.

As for camping on Mount Washington. My opinion is there are no good spots to camp on Mount Washington. Maybe try the tent sites at Hermit Lake.

September is a time of seasonal transition, I would expect temperatures below freezing. Average winds begin to pick up in September as well. Averages however mean little on MOunt Washington, as any conditions can occur at any time. But here are the averages:

Preparing for anything is nearly as important as preparing yourself for the possibility of not making to the summit, and having the wherewithall to turn around. That being said, it could be calm, sunny and 60 degrees, and you'll wonder why the worry!

As for camping, BillO is right, not much option to legally camp on the range. There are sites at hermit lake and at the RMC shelters. For camping off the range...Dolly Copp campground on Rt 16 in Pinkham notch is a popular choice and a personal favorite...

Best of luck...

Here is a Conditions image from 3:00 PM September 30th, 2006. High temperature in the 24 hour period was 32 degrees. Low was 22 degrees. Peak wind gust was 66.5 MPH.

As Bill O said, you can get wonderful days that time of year. Or it could be a bit cold.

Here is a sample Conditions image from last year at the end of September. The temp is "cold" and winds almost to 100 MPH.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I was married Sept 26 1992 on the Summit and we had beautiful weather. I had a group hike up with me and I ended up with all their jackets and sweaters on my pack. I actually was able to climb all the way to the summit shirtless. One of the guys in our group who was doing the rock pile for the first time gave me an incredible scare. After taking a group break at Hojo's he decided to take off on his own. When we caught him he was at the waterfall on the floor of the ravine with his entire head under the waterfall. I thought this is not good being end of Sept. and the weather variability. He climbed up the entire way with a wet head and lucky for him the warm weather held for the rest of our climb. After the wedding the clouds moved in and the temp dropped around 20 degrees. We had reserved the Tip Top house just in case the weather was bad but thankfully we did not need it. We were married on the observation deck with beautiful weather and unlimited views. As seen by the above post you NEVER know what weather you will get at end of Sept.
