View Full Version : MWO Web camera image archive

As many of you know I grab the Conditions and web camera images when they are updated on the MWO site and send them to www.fotki.com/MWO . To provide a bit more structure to the archives I have grouped the 2006 images in albums by month. This makes images for a specific date or time period easier to find - and probably faster.

This has taken days to get done for 2006. But, it is now done. When I get a block of time I will do the same for 2007 and try to keep up with it going forward.

If you have suggestions how to improve the image archive, please let me know.

Charlie,

Thanks for the comments. What is fun to see is the number of visitors going to see archived pictures is going up. It is still a small number, but activity is good.

Organizing the North images is done for 2007. Starting on the Presidentials . . .

The North camera image this morning is a frosty one.

I have finally finished creating the archives by month for 2007 and 2008 for each of the MWO web cameras. Going forward I will have a little bit of effort to just open up a new monthly file, but that should not be too bad. having individual monthly files makes the site more complex, but it make it easier to get to a specific image on a day.

Enjoy . . .

I can see by the site statistics that 143 visitors have viewed images today - and that has been as high as 331 in the past few days. The fact that people are checking them out is the purpose.

There are now 129,197 images on the site taking up 41.28GB of space!

Yes - or the summit fox.

As I was heading out to waterski this morning I snapped the image below just standing on the dock - no tripod. I will crop it a bit later.

What do you think I look like now?

Pictures from this morning are at http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/sports/waterski/2007/ - There are so many I will probably split the albums by person. Just no time to do it now. It is the time of year to tear things down and get the place ready for the winter.

I did split them - so they are the September 1st albums

Brad

The camera is a Canon D60 (a hand me down from my son) with a 100-500mm lens. The morning light for ski pictures can be tough till the sun really gets up.

There were 5 of us in a friend's boat this morning. So, I was a spotter. I just watched the skier through a long lens.

And I took it on STP with the standard lens - and a wide angle - and the 500mm zoom. It was a lot of added weight. You should see my son's new camera! It is awesome.

My son did give me a very good deal on the price of the D60.

That's a really great picture. I'd love to see a full moon shot from that camera. Did you blacken the surrounding sky, or were conditions (humidity, light pollution, cloud cover) just very favorable.

The image went from the camera to the laptop and uploaded with no editing. The moon was in the western sky at sunrise.

Here is an almost full moon shot I took a few years ago.

It is amazing to see how it went from socked in tight to a beautiful day. And one has to remember it can do the same thing in reverse just as fast.

The really good undercast was August 9th. August 10th was "the hole" in the clouds coming across the ground. Both were West camera videos.

If admin can confirm Rich is a Premium member, I will get the 2 files to him. Or tell me I should not do this. I know I can not do it if he is not a Premium member.

Rich,

I remember the time lapse you are talking about and that was fantastic. It was definitely the north cam because i remember the clouds seeming to crash on the shores of Mt Jefferson and Adams. I know it was in the spring but not sure on the month. I will dig through old posts because I know it was discussed.

I use an MWO sunrise photo as my desktop wallpaper. It's the one of Mt. Blue in Maine just before sunrise. Mt. Blue was the first mountain I climbed.

09-12-2007, 08:38 AM
I think that Brad respects that the videos are only viewable by members of the Observatory and does not post them on Fokti.

It would not surprise me though, to know that he keeps an archive of them as well.

Steve M
09-12-2007, 08:45 AM
I wonder if it would work to have a fotki folder that was password protected and only MWO members would be able to view the contents of that folder.

Rich

Oh yea...I forgot, that's privileged viewing for us Preemie's! It wouldn't be on the Fotki site. Duh...:o

Brad
09-12-2007, 04:24 PM
I do not have an automatic pulling process for the videos. I did try to set that up - but needing to stay logged in as a member created a bit of a problem for me "from the outside". So, if I see a nice one, I may save it on my own for myself. The May North video is not one that I saved.

As far as putting it on Fotki, I can not do that since the videos are only available to Premium members. There is no way of password protecting videos that I know of on Fotki since the actual video is up on YouTube. Plus, there would need to be a way of adding and deleting Premium members in synch with the MWO site. That adds a layer of complexity which would be hard to manage.

So, we are on our own for premium content. Maybe by us talking about it, others will see they want to have access - so they will become a member.

Steve M
09-12-2007, 04:54 PM
So what your saying is for right now, the premium content videos are not being stored or archived at all?

Brad

Yes, I do understand that. Let me give a different perspective. The Summit Club is $125 a year. If you were to already be doing an individual membership at $45 a year, it is an extra $80 a year to get the video archives. For the 2,190 videos MWO provides in a year, that is 3.6 cents per video. Not a bad deal.

If you want to go to the next level which is the "231" Club, you are talking about a cost of 10.5 cents per video. That is the price of a quarter cup of coffee each day.

Hmmm, I might have convinced myself I should be raising my membership level next year.

Maybe we can get them to be a sponsor of MWO! They could donate the coffee to the staff - have a pot of blueberry coffee brewing in the Weather Room smelling up the place. Have free blueberry coffee for folks on a tour. Would be great advertising.

This morning's Ravine images are the first of the season showing a summit capped with snow. I copy the 9:00AM Ravines image every day off to a special archive album for the year. Today will show up as the first snow of the winter,

The archive for 2007 is at http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2007/ravines/ravine-save-2007
This one shows up in descending date order so the most recent is first. At the end of the year I will flip it to be in actual date order so the slideshow will work better.

For the end of 2006 it is at http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2006/ravine/ravine-year-2006/
This is in actual date sequence. the slideshow is fun to watch.

And today's 9:00AM Ravines image is

I was over my dad's house last weekend and caught an awesome sunset. I wish I had my camera with me. It really was spectacular. I will be taking the camera with me from now on because he has a clear view of the western sky that I hadn't noticed before.

All of a sudden this evening the uploading process to keep the web camera image archive up to date - stopped. No matter what I did I can not get that computer in Maine to connect through FTP. Soooo, on to Plan B. The process will start running at midnight (if I did this correctly) off my laptop in NC till I can get to Maine this weekend. Things should then be working okay.

I wish I could figure out a way of e-mailing the images to the web site (which can accept them fine). Anyone have any ideas?

Was that 'Go Sox' image a real shot, or was it photoshopped by hopeful Bostonians?

It was a real picture I saved when it was done.

The camera image updating process has stopped. In trying to reboot the server (from my car in Ohio) it is now no longer accessible. I think we had a melt down - of sorts. So, we may be without images for a while. Looks like I have to head to Sam's Club and buy a new computer to get this back and working - oh well.

I am not aware of a particular program, but a relatively simple PHP or Perl script could probably do it. Are your webcams able to run custom scripts?

The web cameras at MWO and the ones I have at home have the ability to FTP the images directly to the Fotki photo web site. My lake camera, for example, sends its images to http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/cabin/web_camera/lakeview/ every 2 minutes.

The MWO cameras could do this also, but they would not have the MWO logo and time stamp branding. So, the process MWO goes through to produce the images is an offline one. Once they have an image they move it to the web server and it is available to us to view. Their process could also send the image as an e-mail attachment - but setting this up is not on their priority list - especially if I can get it working. The image archive is my personal "volunteer" project.

Right now I grab the images when they change and save them to disk (this is an easy step). Sending them to the Fotki site on a schedule with the proper date and timestamp is what I do with standard programs today. I would like to make it an easier process.

This is running on a old, small desktop at my cabin in Maine and seems to fall apart and break just when I do not have good access to the machine. I finally got frustrated, went to Sam's Club today and bought a computer to run this work on. I am hoping to make this a more dependable process.

For a day that has not given us much of a view on the web cameras it has turned to be an awesome sight now. Here are a couple of pictures that just came up.

The "North View" sunset movie is amazing as well. The clouds look like waves in a pond.

The December 2007 albums have been archived into the 2007 folder. The January images are flowing to the new albums in a 2008 folder and all should be set for the month.

The Presidentials camera caught several really nice pictures today. Here are 2 I moved to the "Favorites - 2008" album.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could account for the missing block of about 3 hours in the summit conditions archive on 2/14/08. It jumps from 9:45 to 12:16. The 12:16 image shows a bit of a dip in the wind in the past few hours. I'm particularly interested in the 11:15 temp and wind speed as it was then I was standing on Madison...

It goes from this:

http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2008/conditions-archive/20080214095424conditions.html

to this:

http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2008/conditions-archive/20080214123303conditions.html

with nothing in between.

Thanks,
Tim

Unfortunately there are times the FTP upload of the MWO images gets hung up and they fail. I pull the images as they change and the files are saved on my computer at the cabin in Maine. Then I have an FTP upload program that runs on a schedule to upload. It has 3 tries every 15 minutes to do the uploads - then we have a new image.

I have been trying to find a different and better solution - but right now we have periods when we miss out. I am open to suggestions. It is likely that an e-mail sending process with the images as attachments would work better. I think those would catch up even if there was a problem at the Fotki end.

Also, when Microsoft sends out patches and forces a reboot to the computer we miss out till I realize that happened and then restart the computer.

You aren't forced to accept the automatic updates and reboots from Microsoft. You aren't forced to run Windows at all; you could run Ubuntu or some other Linux distribution ;)

No big deal, I can probably interpolate using the 12:16 image...

When I get a chance tonight I will do more research on scheduled e-mail sending programs. They seem to only get down to daily and I want every 5 or 10 minutes.

Plus, that computer is the guest system. Visitors use it to surf and check e-mail when they are staying at the cabin.
