View Full Version : MWO Web Camera images
The Mt Washington Observatory is currently running 4 web cameras posting the images to their site every 15 minutes. Some of the cameras continue through the night. The Deck camera image was altered for me to include the wind and temperature along with the camera image. I grab these 4 camera images throughout the day and night when they change - and upload them to a Fotki.com web site I set up for this purpose. In addition, I upload the Weather Conditions image also. This shows the prior 24 hour wind and temperature at the summit.
By going to http://public.fotki.com/mwo you will be able to go back through the images for the day in the "Current" folder and also check out prior days' images in the "Saved Images" folder.
The current album and folder structure is:
http://images16.fotki.com/v350/photos/8/8235/242566/MWOFotki-vi.jpg
So, if you are hiking to the summit, stand on the observation deck within view of the Deck camera on the quarter hour. When you get home your picture should be available for you in the http://public.fotki.com/MWO/current/deck/ album.
Enjoy!

Great job, I always wanted some way to look at archived photos. So now i have book marked your link
thanks
Soose
I too have wanted an archive of the images for a while. The MWO folks did not have a plan for it - and they are concerned about bandwidth and disk space requirements trying to do it. So, I worked with them and set up processes (which don't always work but are doing pretty well) to flow the images and make them available through a phot web site at Fotki.com.
I was reviewing the images from the weekend and it was great weather and lots of people made a summit visit!
FYI - The Conditions image is currently stuck saying it is "Monday Sept 15th" at the top of the image. I have sent an e-mail to the webmaster at MWO letting him know. When something like this happens he normally gets it fixed very quickly. (Thanks, Jake)
Note: either it is already fixed or I was confused.
The answer is - I was confused.
Since I will be keeping the Archived images for multiple years, I have created a 2007 set of archive albums and have moved the 2006 images into its own 2006 folder. This will give us the ability to go back in time to see anything for research.
In addition, I have created a "Submissions" album. This is where you can e-mail photos as attachments and they will get posted to the web site. Right now I have it set so the images will go to a hidden album and I will move them to the public album. This will prevent any Off Topic or objectionable photos from being posted. If over time we see there are no issues with the submissions, I may be able to change it so the e-mailing goes directly to the public album.
I use this feature off my cell phone when I am traveling or hiking on my personal Fotki site. I can take a cell phone picture and e-mail it directly to the site. I just e-mailed a 2MB file and it was in the hidden album in 25 seconds.
To do this send the e-mail attachment to "mwo+email@fotki.com"
Yes, this is a plus sign.
Once the image appears in the public album, add a comment to tell me what the title and copyright information should be.

Just to be clear, what sort of size limitations are you looking for?
Just to be clear, what sort of size limitations are you looking for?
I am trying to see what limitations Fotki has processing file attachments coming through e-mail - and adding the images to the web site. I have done a 2MB file and am trying a 3MB and a 4MB file to see if they come through. Probably the limiting factor will be the e-mail systems - and not Fotki. I have uploaded 9MB files to Fotki through a normal upload process - just not through e-mail.

Quick question? Where is the camera on the deck? Is it attached to the tower? All the times I have been up there I have never really looked for it. Now another question? When was it installed? Just curious if it was up and running in 92 when I got married on the deck. If so it would be neat to look back at sept. 26, 1992 1:30 P.M.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't there in 1992. I think it was installed in the late 90's.
The camera is inside the tower, directly above the red A-Frame.

If you were to go into the main observation room - enter the tower and go UP. There is a section at the top of the steps which is open and it has windows all around. At the east window on the inside is a shelf and the camera is mounted there looking out through the window at the deck. Some times it gets kicked and you see the window frame on the side of the image.
My intent is to archive images by year so one could go back and see what happened and what the weather was like on a specific day. We will see how long I can keep the process going before someone automates it better than it is now. I have figured it out, but the MWO staff have not agreed to implement it yet. Actually, it would be real simple to fully automate the process. Jake, are you listening? When you update each image all you need to do is e-mail each file to an e-mail address. I can give you an address for each image. And the process is done. We would not need to have a "Current" and a "Saved" set of albums. The images would flow directly to the archive for the year. Jake - are you there? I will probably send a detailed e-mail to him with my proposal.
Thanks!! Thinking about climbing first week in Nov. so if I make it to the summit I will make sure to smile for the camera. Never knew that camera was there.
Just make sure you are there on the quarter hour. The image should be on the fotki.com/mwo web site in a couple of minutes.
I just did a test and sent 4 e-mails to the mwo+email@fotki.com address. One had a 3 MB image file attachment, one had a 4 MB, one 5 MB, and one with a 6 MB attachment. All came through on Fotki just fine.
So, if you have photos you want to share with others of the Mt Washington area or from a hike, send them as an attachment to mwo+email@fotki.com

It is a great idea. This forum is another. I have 35 years of mountain time, and on and off observatory membership. I have some pictures from the 90's I have to scan in.
I am hoping to find a box of old pictures and get them scanned also. Now where was that box ....
Sunset today from the West camera was nice!

What is the significance of the North camera image right now?

I'm not sure why it's pointed at the thermometer.
I do know that the North View Cam is located inside the observers office in a big metal box, aptly named: Big Metal Box. The box is heated to keep the windows rime-free. My guess is that somebody accidently or purposely moved the camera to read the temperature in the box and they forgot to move it back.
But, it does prove we do watch the cameras.
Ha - it is set back to looking out the window at snow and clouds.

who wouldn't want to wake up to that view. are you sad to see the snow and the warm weather, or do you realize that winter will return whether we like it or not. living in california, don't have the cold weather that you see. i really enjoy this site, thanks for sharing .
sharon
Winter will certainly return - in full force. And it is a beautiful time of year. I grew up in RI and the fresh snow turned messy and dirty quite quickly. In northern New England the snow comes and stays through the winter staying white and fresh. There are lots of things to do outside to enjoy the season.
I enjoy hiking back into Tuckerman's Ravine in the winter. We pick a day with good weather (if at all possible) and usually find the trail to be well packed down at least back to HoHo's. The wind chill might be 35 below zero, but it is so nice in the Ravine and beautiful. Some pictures of these winter hikes can be found in the "Hikes" section of my personal photo web site.

This will be our first winter in NH. Although we live in south central NH, I do hope the snow will last white and cleaner than I have ever seen it before. Living in Northern NJ and MD and VA, the snow would be beautiful to look at for 48 hours and then turn to slush and dirt. SO lets get this week over with upcoming as the 15 day forecast is calling for snow here in NH the day after Turkey Day!!! I am having SWS. (Snow withdrawal Syndrome). :)
I agree - we need snow. I am planning on hiking back into Tuckerman's Ravine December 2nd to take pictures. Folks who might come with me want to watch the Army-navy game on Saturday. Sure hope Sunday is better weather than Saturday.

Brad,
Hope you had a safe drive to Ohio. You may get your wish as there is supposed to be a arctic front coming down later next week. You may get some snow up in the mountains here. Of course it could change. But have a safe trip back home and then up here.
Another nice sunset.

Recently the Deck, North and West images have stopped refreshing between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM - like the Ravines image has not been updating at night either for a while. Is there a technical reason why the images are not being updated 24x7?
In the past we have had some very nice images of moon rise off the Deck camera and others. Here is one I saved from the ravines image.

Brad, that is a nice capture of the moon by the cam up there. If it is clear tonight, there should be some spetacular moon photos
BUT, the cameras do not update on the site at night now. So, we will not get a chance even if things line up to be viewable by a camera or two.

The picture you posted could easily be mistaken for a flashlight. Unfortunately, the image quality is extremely poor in low light. If we could focus on the night sky and capture stars, the moon, or the northern lights we certainly would. I don't think our members would be interested in nighttime pictures unless camera technology makes significant progress.

I agree, there isn't much to those nighttime shots. That moon is a bright white circle surrounded with black. A good moon photo usually involves some detail and texture.
I agree with you both - with today's cameras at the summit and across the ravine. But, cameras today can get a far better image to allow folks to see a lot at night. I live a mile back off the closest paved road - no street lights. Normally we have a string of Xmas lights along a railing to mark the pathway to get to the house. Without them on it would be so dark you can not see a thing.
I just turned the lights off so there is no light outside except for the full moon. The image below is what my outside web camera sees - at 8:59 PM.

what is the cost of a camera like that

$500 for a Toshiba web camera. It is either ethernet network cable attached - or it can be 802.11b wireless "attached". I run 2 of them wireless at the house. In addition I have 2 Linksys indoors cameras wireless also - but they are a lot cheaper and not as good quality. The Toshiba can get 1,024x768 if it is a wired setup - and up to 30fps. I do not run that quality as it sucks up bandwidth through my ISP. And it struggles at that quality when wireless.
A key requirement for me was the wireless and the IP network based configurations. I can easily get to the web server pages in the cameras through the Internet from NC to change things.
The view yesterday out the West camera.

So, I can not connect to the server in Maine from NC to fix it. I am hoping the laptop comes back from service tomorrow and I will fix things tomorrow evening. I hope.

The unusually high amount of ice and direction of wind caused that massive shelf of rime to grow several feet deep off the window frame into the North view. I'd hate to be up there during the next thaw!!
Your timing was excellent!

The North and Ravines camera images are not flowing this morning. The latest one available is 6:30AM. The others are all working fine.
Please kick the North camera and have someone run up Wildcat Mt to restart the Ravines camera.

Thank you for fixing them. Whoever fixed the Ravines camera is a fast runner. I am impressed.
If you look carefully at the summit in the picture below you will see a light. It was there in the early morning picture too. Any idea what it is?

There are lights that are left on outdoors all night up there. One is at the door to the Yankee Building, the other is at the entrance to the Sherman Adams Building. Both could be visible from his cam, so I'm not sure which one this is but I guess the latter, as the Yankee one is probably blocked from view by the Stage Office.

What is interesting is i have never seen it before. Maybe the camera image quality is better now.

While waiting for the new content I went to http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2006/ravine-save/ and ran the slideshow for all the pictures in the album. They start in the beginning of April 2006 and go through the rest of the year - one image per day from the Ravines camera. The slideshow link is at the upper right when viewing the thumbnail pictures.
Once the show starts there is a "Menu" item to the right that you can click on. Drag the time delay to the left to around 2 seconds and then click Menu again for that pull out to go away.
Sit back and watch the spring arrive - go through summer - then finally fall and no snow - then snow - it goes away and then comes back by the end of the year.
Some of my favorite images are:

12:30 PM Deck camera showed what looked like a family reunion. Or was it the crew all done getting the new content on the web site?

We're working through this... When the camera grabs the time-lapse images, it disables the script that grabs the regular image updates. Our tech crew is working on this and we hope to have a fix in the not-too-distant future.

I made a change in the way the MWO camera images get archived on the Fotki site. They no longer go to a "Current Images" folder. they go straight to the "Saved Images / 2007" folder. this means I do not have to move the images every day from current to saved. :)
We will watch this a bit to make sure it stays running okay. The link in my signature goes to this year's archives at http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2007/

Remember to be in position on the quarter hour. Then your picture will be caught.

good that way i wont have to stand out there for a full hour
MWO Staff,
Can you add to a web page the time according to the MWO servers and web cameras? This will allow us to refresh the page and make sure our watches are set to agree with MWO Time - before we hike up.
Then when we stand out on the deck for the Deck camera we will know when the quarter hour is.
The Deck Cam has been fogged over today. But, the West Cam did catch several groups going by.

I agree, this would be a great day to summit!
I am in NC - pick me up on the way by. An 8:00 AM trail start is a bit late, but I am sure we can make it.
The Observer Comments today have a picture of last night's sunset. The closest we got on the West camera image is the 8:15 PM image.

I found Ryan's comments deep, personal and beautiful, like the views from the summit he is describing. He seldom writes the comments, so it was a nice deviation from the norm.
More! More!

Not really a "web cam" picture, but I did not want to start a new thread for this. The Comments today have a great picture of Nin that could be a cool screensaver or computer background. Maybe we could get a signed copy?
