Here is some for you - taken this morning on the deck. The vertical posts are 10-12 inches in diameter.

Not only is the lake getting dumped on . . .

My wife says it is snowing harder than she has ever seen it coming down.

At the end of December I had major bald spots. So, are you saying that with this storm I will not be bald at the end of this month? Keep it snowing - please.

That is great! I noticed that the driveway reached a point where it could keep up but it was after there was already a few inches on it. Still better than having to go out every hour to clear it.

I am afraid if I start a sunrise view club my members will be disappointed, noting that I have a horrible view that direction. It would take more than a few members to resolve that issue!

Saturday we went out at about 10AM, we rode to Fryeburg, had some lunch, got in about 4:30 or 5, just after dark, probably put on about 90 miles. I am still a bit sore. I had to show my brother (12 years my junior) I could still out ride him. I did! but I'm paying for it now. One of these days I'm gonna ride up to your cabin and surprise you.

Every morning that has a viewable sunrise I am grabbing the first light image off the lake cam and posting them to http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/cabin/web_camera/save/misc-saved/2007-sunrises/

It is fun already to run through the slideshow (link to the upper right) of the pictures (which started on Dec 21st 2007 - shortest day of the year). One thing is when the branches are heavy with snow they drop down into view. And if you put your mouse right at where the sun comes up in the beginning you can already see it start to shift to the left as the sun starts to swing more to the east.

I thought to myself that there is NO WAY that was a night time shot, but I just looked at your "lake cam" at 9:20 PM eastern and it really does look like it's the middle of the day. those are some impressive cameras.

the "Long Lake" in the web address, is that the same Long Lake that has the "Songo River Queen" paddleboat? I have many great memories as a kid in that area. My parents had a place on Sebago when I was growing up.

Brad
02-20-2008, 06:06 AM
Yes, Naples is the home of the Songo River Queen. She normally stays at the southern end of the lake and down towards the Songo River locks. However, she does tour the northern part of our lake for private parties.

Speaking of cameras, This is a pretty inexpensive (read cheap) one that was strapped to my helmet. It doesn't have a viewfinder, so I never know where it is exactly pointed until I view it via a PC. And the motion stability is lacking, but it is small and waterproof. It stores the video on an SD card.

Yes, I am just south of the town beach - about a mile. A good friend of mine lives in the red house to the south of the beach - used to be a B&B years ago. Also good friends with the prior owners who moved a couple of doors down.

I don't wear panties so I wouldn't know. F.Y.I, we measured 5.5" of rain from early afternoon yesterday through midnight last night. We are getting round two tonight. It will be interesting to see how much more we get.

P.S. 5.5" of rain would translate to +/- 55" of snow. That would be sweet!

The guys came back again today for a few minutes to work on the ice in the roof valleys. They will probably be back tomorrow. They use a chainsaw to cut large blocks of ice. Then using a sledgehammer they break the block of ice loose and it goes crashing onto the deck or lower roof or . . .

My conservative totals for our camp are at 129" using both my measurements and totals posted to the NWS site. But I had been rounding down on most storm totals. Thankfully this summer we installed a new metal roof, which has shed most of the snow. I did have to get up on the roof several times to persuade it. Two weeks ago we witnessed a roof collapse while riding into town, it was a residence (double wide trailer), total loss.

Charlie
03-08-2008, 02:59 PM
brad how is your roof doing ,you do have a good pitch to the roof .what is it asphalt shingles ?
how is the roof on the pump house [ now that's a lot of snow ]

Brad
03-08-2008, 05:50 PM
we hired a crew to shovel our roof. They were there most of the time for 4 days. They shoveled lots of snow (up to their arm pits) and used a chainsaw to cut blocks of ice and then used a sledgehammer to break them loose. They did a great job of getting it cleared and the deck cleared before the rains came today.

The pumphouse roof is doing fine (we think) and the woodshed has a metal roof and seems to be doing fine.

Several schools have been closed and businesses due to cracked beams. Some homes have collapsed. Decks are giving way. I was across the lake today at the summer camps there. One deck let go today and they have others with a lot more snow and ice. Those will get more work over the next few days. Some roofs have 4 feet of snow on them. Decks have 5-8 feet of snow and ice. It is tough here - and the rain is just making it heavier.

What is interesting is Portland has very little snow. As you drive away from the coast there is not much snow till you get to Naples and then our town is slammed.

spyboy
03-08-2008, 06:43 PM
Same thing here in Manchester. We got a lot of rain last month but up north around Laconia, they were getting 6-8 inches per storm.

Going with a standing seam or more shingles?

I had a standing seam in Vermont. One day at lunch it warmed up just enough for all of the snow to cut loose. The entire house shook and when I ran into the living room (didn't know what was going on) I watched a mini avalanche pour onto the deck so hard, it flipped the plastic deck furniture over the railings down into the yard. Pretty funny but scary at the same time!

A standing seam roof can be nice in the rain, with the sound but also noisy when it rains really hard (or turns to sleet)

The terror and confusion that accompanies snow sliding off your roof is all part of the magic of a New England snowstorm.

We really would like a metal or copper roof. But, the cost is a lot more. The cabin's footprint is 45x45 feet and then the 2 car garage. There are 15 different roof surfaces all tied together. Nope - we are going the shingles route again. But, we are hoping to find a cost effective way of updating the insulation in the roof system. Squirrels and such have matted it down when they were running around in the roof. That plus this being the first winter someone has lived in the house all winter has added to the ice making problem.

The roof has a very long run on the deck/lake side since the cabin is 2 stories on the front and only one story at the deck. The builder was concerned that chunks of ice would slide down the roof and pop the skylights out like bottle caps. He was designing ramps for the ice to go up and over the skylights when we said no metal roof. The current roofer had the same concern.

Charlie

how about using those metal cleats to keep the ice and snow from sliding down the roof

Brad
03-10-2008, 08:39 PM
On a shingles roof there is not much sliding of ice. On a metal roof that could be interesting. But, the cost of a metal roof is out of our range.

In Vermont and elsewhere, I've seen metal used for the last couple of feet of a shingle roof - seems to help keep things moving, without the full cost of a metal roof...

Yes, I talked with the roofer last weekend about doing that. As he said, it does not look good and they only come in one color. But it may help. I am not sure how far back they have to go - since we have 3 foot roof overhangs.

Might want to try this ActiveX plugin for FireFox: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/ActiveX&bl=y

Brad correctly pointed out that this plugin doesn't work in the current version of Firefox (or anything later than 2.0). However this one does (IE Tab):

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

It is a bit of a cheat since what it does is use the IE engine in a Firefox tab. Just tried it with Brad's web cams and it works fine. The nice thing is that you keep all your regular Firefox features while using the IE rendering tab (OK, most of them). You can also configure it to automatically switch to IE rendering when particular URLs are opened. So, for example, you just configure longlake.homeip.net as an IE site and Brad's cams are always just a click away :)

6288 (Steve), it looks like you have open water in front of your cabin. How can that be with us having almost 4 feet of snow on the ground still?

6288
03-25-2008, 10:01 AM
The water in front of our place is at the outlet of the pond and the start of the Muddy river (which flows into Naples). With the recent rains I believe the water levels have risen and the flow intensified. It has little to do with the temperature, I have seen it open and close in temps below zero. But 40 degrees days are also starting to factor in.

Brad

we still have several feet of snow on the ice and then probably a couple of feet of ice.

When I was working in NY and going to Maine every weekend, we used to put the ski boat in the water May 1st and start waterskiing. That was normally about 2 weeks after Ice Out.

On a side not, I was recently in Oregon at Yaquina Head Lighthouse and they would not allow you to carry any gear up the lighthouse stairs out of fear of you dropping it. I can see their point but it still was disappointing.

There are 219 steps. The rise of each step is constant as you go up. The width of the steps narrows as you get higher and the tower diameter gets smaller. The top of the lighthouse is 165 feet above sea level.

Ha - someone is on as the camera is moving around. You must be in IE to work the new cameras. There is a plugin for ActiveX which has to be installed. You should be prompted for it the first time you go to the camera.

In fact you could have come down and joined the party since you are a mile up the lake.

I think lunch took all day. We got both docks and my 2 moorings out in an hour and a half. We had enough people and it went well. The fact it was raining all the time did not matter since we were going to get wet anyway.

Here we are just starting on our dock. Joe is in the white t-shirt walking down the dock.

Sunrise this morning started off nice and had lots of potential. But, the clouds rolled in and cut it off.

What a great view! Jon, I will have to swing by and introduce myself when I am up mid-November. Will you be around? And which house is it north of the town beach?

I saved the first image off the lake web camera for the whole year of each sunrise that could be seen. The dates are December 21, 2007 thru December 21, 2008.

Very cool, I like watching the sun migrate along the horizon.

I wanted the grandkids to see how it changes throughout the year. It turned out pretty well.

It was cool to see the ice leave the lake and then return in the last few frames.

Brad,

Looks like you still have plenty of snow at the lake house. Your neighbors were out and about early this morning.

Everyone was up and out early. Yes, there is plenty of snow - and the roads were icy this morning. We might be taking the kids tubing and sledding again tomorrow after it all freezes again.

That sounds great. I miss sledding. I remember in CT when it would snow then get freezing rain and we could walk on top of the icy snow. We would get our flexible flyers out and go forever on that ice.

This just happened on my web camera at the lake. The almost full moon showing through the clouds and the light bouncing off the ice on the lake in front of the camera.

Brad

Yes, most of the snow even in the woods is gone. The ice is about to go out. Yesterday as I was watching the camera - when in the car - the ice is starting to turn dark. This is the last sign before it goes.

Yes, it will go very quickly once it turns dark since it will absorb the sunlight.

Today we can see it breaking up along the shore. I will check it out in person tomorrow.
