I am back in NC and having to get my Maine Fix through the web cameras. The sun is starting to peek over the trees on the other side of the lake. Just a trace of clouds in the sky. And a few whisps of mist are rising off the lake near the other shore. The lake is flat with a few ripples. A little bit of a breeze out of the north. How beautiful it is . . .

Peek! The sun is up and rays are spreading out in all directions.

Good morning all.

The office cam may be down for a while. It seems someone must have moved the antenna pointing from the house to the office for the wireless connection. It may not be fixed and running till I get back to Maine for Columbus Day weekend.

That's not Venus, it's the headlamp of an early morning flight out of Portland. Or , maybe it's M_six in his F-16 coming to fly over your lake house.:D

Not entirely sure, but venus does exhibit phases, like the moon. I think that it is in a waxing mode right now. In addition, I also think that it's position is currently closer to the earth.

My new web camera at the lake only works with Internet Explorer - and not Firefox. It seems someone has written some javascript to make it work in Firefox. This works well - but you have to have the password to get on the camera as administrator. If anyone knows of a different approach, let me know.

I love the mists over lakes in the fall. I've been enjoying some myself on my new commute. This is right near Kevin's house:

Back to Venus for the moment
Came across this from Spaceweather.com for September 22, 2007

"MAXIMUM VENUS: In a celestial coincidence of eye-catching proportions, Venus reaches maximum brightness for all of 2007 on Sept. 23rd, the autumnal equinox. In short, northern fall is beginning with a bright light in the dawn sky.

How bright? This morning in Florida, Howard Eskildsen saw Venus after sunrise:

"The clouds over Ocala parted to reveal Venus and a deep blue sky framed by fragile fluffs of clouds," he says.

Shining at magnitude -4.5, Venus is 10 times brighter than Jupiter and 16 times brighter than Sirius--the brightest star in the heavens! And while Venus is visible in broad daylight, it is easier to find before sunrise. No sky map is necessary. Simply look east for the brilliant light.

BONUS: Got a backyard telescope? Point it at Venus. Like the Moon, Venus has phases, and at the moment it is a beautifully slender crescent. Take a look!"

I will probably lock down the camera in the winter so that we can not move it around. The temperature will be colder than the camera is supposed to operate in - so, we are hoping this will still be okay.

Don't you think the safe operating temperature indicated is a little on the conservative side? Not that I'd want to be doing the experimenting.

That is really cool (pun intended). Our driveway camera has done fine in the winter - but it is mounted on the house. The garden camera will get moved to the peak over the glass windows so it will be mounted on the house out of the weather. That leaves the lake camera exposed.

I have a new camera coming this week to be the replacement for the garden camera. Figured if we are going to the trouble of mounting it up at the peak over the deck might as well do a new one (PoE) instead of a real old one. So, we will have a spare.

I hope you are up now to watch the sunrise this morning. The water is flat with no breeze. Venus is high in the image and about to go out of sight. And there is a light bank of clouds along the coast by Portland way in the distance. It should be a nice one.

I changed the interval for images to be sent to my Fotki site to be every 10 seconds. One the sun is up I will change it back to every 2 minutes.

That was a nice sunrise. Venus looks huge, probably due to the atmosphere's magnifying effect. I bet the water is getting colder now that the days are getting shorter and the nights cooler.

I did get waterskiing yesterday and the water temp was 66. It was very nice and just used a shortie wetsuit.

Back on topic, I swapped the garden camera out and replaced it with a new Power Over Ethernet model like i have at the lakeside. Plus, we moved the location to be up on the peak of the house to get a better angle on things.

Steve et al, have fun.

Brad

Brad, It looks like you mounted that camera high up near the peak. Did you climb a ladder to get up there?
Nope - I did not do the climbing, my son did! He used a 30' extension ladder to get up there. The camera is mounted at the end of the log purlin at the peak over the deck. With PoE we just had to string network cable from the basement switch up a copper gutter and under the eaves to the camera. No power is needed outside.

I have been pleased with the image quality even at 960x480 resolution. When I change the camera to 1280x960 it is wonderful, but it takes a lot of bandwidth. If it was just me accessing the camera I would run at 1280. But, knowing there are others coming at the camera I dropped it down a notch.

It is really high up there compared to ground level at the wooden swing or the lower level at the campfire.

Looking at the camera from the campfire.

Steve (FL),

Here is a more complete outside tour of the property. I will be updating this next summer now that our rock walls and landscaping work is done.

http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/cabin/outside_2006/

Steve (Maine),

My son picked up a small Panasonic web camera to play with and see what they are like. I am not sure where he plans on using it on his property. I do know he will be getting several Toshiba cameras as the main set on the different buildings. He has the old garden camera from my place (was his camera anyway) now that I updated that with the camera up above the deck. Once Time Warner installs his cable service he will at least get that camera running.

Did you have this house built? If so, was it ordered as a kit off a floor plan you liked? What log home company did you buy from. What brand are those casement windows? Now I know why your still working.:D

Yes, we had the house built. My wife and I did the design and then we worked with Alpine Log Homes in Victor, Montana. They provided the engineering drawings and the logs. Our local builder did the rest.

The windows and doors are from a Canadian company - Donat Flamand. they have since been bought by Jen-Weld. Web site is at http://www.donatflamand.com/jeldwen/en/default.asp?IdSection=0

The windows are very heavy duty - glass is extra thick - frames are solid wood.

Steve M
10-10-2007, 10:25 PM
They sound nice. I'm not surprised that they were bought out by Jeld-Wen. It seems a lot of smaller companies are being bought out by bigger ones. Not necessarily for the better I might add.

I was pleased to see that DF continued as a product line of its own after the buy-out. When we were looking the big names had casement windows, but the mechanics were light and flimsy. DF was solid as a rock.where normally the builder would have 2 people in install a window, he had to use 3 or 4 because they were so much heavier than other brands.

We installed the windows in 1991 and contacted the lumber yard the other day that 2 glass panels in a couple of doors were fogging up. They asked for the serial numbers etched in the glass and they will provide replacement glass units - no cost. We do have to do installation. That is good customer service.

That's awesome. It is always better to pay for quality, than to skimp for a "good deal". Usually in the long run that "good deal" ends up costing more with all the headaches involved. We carry a line of vinyl casement windows that are very well constructed. Triple weather seals and strong hardware. They are Dade County approved and can withstand wind loads of 200mph+.

Brad,

What kind of cameras are these? I thought there was a thread with extensive discussion about this matter. If so, please point me in that direction.

I have a camera setup at my parent's farm in VT but the quality isn't that great. I'm thinking about upgrading.

Do you have a weather station setup in Maine? You can easily put the data on the internet via Weather Underground.

But can they withstand a pebble going 75mph? Passing the lab test is easy, its the real world that gets you.

You are right, strange things happen in the real world that can't be duplicated in the lab. I bet no one has duplicated a piece of straw penetrating a fence post yet, but it has happened in nature. The impact tests on these windows are impressive though. They're done with a 2x4 fired out of a cannon at 50 fps (feet per second) which is almost 75 mph, and it doesn't penetrate the laminate. These glass units are 3 times stronger than auto glass. I would rather have these between me and the storm than just regular glass any day.

We did have a bit of a discussion before but I think it was a bit off topic and therefore hard to find now.

The cameras are Toshiba IK-WB15A network IP cameras. The zoom is not as nice as the Panasonic Steve has in S Bridgton, Maine. But, I like the quality of the image. The product page is at http://www.toshibasecurity.com/products/prod_camera_detail_ikwb15a.jsp

I do not have a weather setup. We have talked about it - mainly for wind data since we are a waterskiing (no wind) and windsurfing (lots of wind) family. But, the cabin is too protected in the trees to get much of a reading. There is a West Bridgton (Knights Hill) station on Weather Underground - and the Fryeburg airport data seems to be very close to what we get at the cabin.

Steve,

On my web site you commented about the lighting of the cabin from the lake side. This summer we set up 10 lights in the woods between the cabin and the lake shining up into the trees. They look really cool at night! Here are a couple of pictures from the old web camera when it was mounted on the side of the deck.

To get the sunrise (in the east) you have to swing the camera to the right. All the way to the left is NNE. It has been interesting to see how sunrise has moved from a little north of straight ahead of the camera to now where it is way to the right.

Quite true. But, I would never say a sunrise in Maine or NH is a dud. We have had lots of rain recently and the sunrises have not been visible. A couple of days there was not a cloud in the sky which does make the sunrise very dull.

A slight correction - Portland is to the SE. And you are right that Windham is in between and it could be the source of the light. Even now there is quite a strong light to the SE. You may be right that Windham could be the major light source.

These Toshiba cameras are excellent in low light even when kept in color mode. When they switch to B&W at low light they are even better. I like sunrise in color mode, so the cameras stay in color mode all the time. For outdoors they are excellent.

If you use FireFox or IE 7, open a web page. Then go to a new tab and then go to the web camera. The re-size is only done if it is the only tab open.

Having a single tab open (i.e., no tabs) shouldn't make a difference. However disabling the browser's ability to have javascript open up a new window might.

Brad
11-09-2007, 12:53 PM
The way the code seems to work on all the Toshiba cameras I have is that when the login page is displayed, the window is re-sized. Click login and the new window opens with the camera image.

If you have more than one tab in the browser, then the re-size function does not happen for both IE7 and Firefox when the login age is displayed.

Yes, I got in before 7AM today. busy day with plumbers, the bank, lawyer, accountant, starting to move my office at home, changed my internal wireless network to 802.11-n, installed a new interior web camera. Not much time for getting outside and enjoying it all.

Oh, once I made the network changes in the cabin I did a speed measurement using the www.vonage.com Help test site. 9.5 Mbps download and 2.6 Mbps upload with 99% QoS. I love speed.

Your upload speed is great! Your download speed is pretty slow. Weird too, since you're also on Comcast. They've upped their speeds in the past few months (that's why you get almost 1500 on your upload, it used to be 384 unless you paid the extra $10/month to get it to 768)

They also have "burst" modes, where I guess when there's little traffic on their lines, they let you have more bandwidth (I've only seen it a few times usually to big sites like Microsoft, when pulling files from their MSDN)

Kirk

I pay the extra $10/month for my comcast broadband, because I need the upload bandwidth (web designer). The speed burst is random and only on downloads from what I found.

But, my speeds are usually 15-20 megabit

Everyone seems to focus on download speed only. Yes, it is important. But, the ratio of the download and upload speeds is also critical. Get the download speed to be too fast (compared to the upload speed) and the link will get bogged down and everything slows down. For each packet that comes down there is a response that is sent back up. A lot coming down can fill the uplink with responses making it so you get nothing down. We have seen that happen as "improvements" were made in download speed and the upload stayed the same.

The ISPs throttle the upload speeds for residential service - unless you go to their Turbo package. Then the upload is increased giving you better overall throughput - and it is better for accessing the house's web cameras remotely.:)

spyboy
11-13-2007, 08:38 AM
I think your weird results are because you're on wireless. There's alot of other stuff going on there, like caching to assist in speed. I saw similar issues when helping a friend debug his DirectPC satellite broadband (because it sends & receives through satellite and the uplink is so slow, the server it connected to would cache pages and compress to send them down faster, latency was rediculous)

Kirk

Brad

Kirk,

Caching at AT&T Wireless may be the issue. If the speed test sites would use a large image with a ? at the end of the URL, then it would not be cached and we would get more stable results. I had not thought of caching as the cause.

There are several folks seem to use a lot.

http://www.speedtest.net

https://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=497&category=73&nav=6

http://www.aroundcinci.com/speedtest/ - they have a quirk which pops back into their code every once in a while. If you reload the page after doing a slowband speed test they reload the broadband test. Other Road Runner locations use this one behind the scenes.

Brad,

Still can't believe how that camera captures starlight.
Check out the lake camera now. The stars are moving on by. It is crisp and clear. The camera's images are being sent to the Fotki web site every minute now. It will be interesting to see if the stars are clear enough to be seen in a video of the night.

Brad

Interesting sequence of images just came by. It looks like an airplane flew out of Portland and is headed northwest. In this image from the left edge of the image go right along the water's edge on the far shore to the first bright light. Above that are 2 lights in the sky. The left hand one is a star. The right one has a tail due to the slow shutter speed the camera changes to for low light situations. The right hand light with the tail is a plane. From image to image it moves from the east towards northwest.

Also, do they normally drain the lake that low? I know they must take it down for dock work, but I was suprised to see it so low. Actually, our pond is finally coming up after a low water season.

Steve, when I finished blowing leaves (after dark) last ight we went down by the lake to look at the moon rising and the reflections on the lake. A great sight.

I understand the to-do list. I have been here all week and have 3 more things to get done before I leave this morning for NC. Maybe I will see you at the dump first thing. It has been a good week though.

I was thinking about you last night and checked out your camera. No deer in sight then. The view is better with the deer than the bird feeder.

Yes, they drain our lake down this much each year. Normally there is snow and ice on it by the time they can get it low.

I would but they blow into the neighbors yards and they don't share the same appreciation of fake snow as I do.

What I need is a lot of synthetic pillow stuffing. I could blanket the whole yard 6" thick. Then all I need is cold temps and that would be stellar!:D

Since it is warm (35 degrees) the snow melting makes for a foggy day. It is hard to see much of anything right now.

The folks up here are really serious about their snowmobile trails. There is quite a system of them. "6288" can tell you more about them since he uses them. I hear of folks going 300 miles by snowmobile.

Brad, how are the snowmobile trails up that way?

I'm not sure what you are used to, but the trails are decent here. Not quite like the Northern higher elevation trail system. The system around here is made of smaller, somewhat narrower trails, more family oriented I believe. There are some good clubs around and they keep the trails groomed well. Not a daily thing like up North, but as traffic warrants. There are about 600 miles of trails in the 5 town system locally. But you can get on the main corridors and get to Canada if you wanted.

how much snow is on the ground now

Brad
12-29-2007, 09:26 PM
There is between 18 and 24 inches on the ground. The rain the other day ate a lot of snow. At this point we probably have close to what we got all last year.

There is almost no light out there - so my son's camera is is B&W as well as a slow shutter mode to try to get enough light. It results in a grainy picture.

Yes, the driveway is making good progress. The storm started at 3AM. So, in 6 hours we got 6" of snow. Even with that I drove out earlier for coffee. Getting down the driveway to get back in was touchy but worked fine after the first 10 foot slide. Temp outside is 25. The plumber asked me to make a change to send more heat to the driveway vs. the front walkway. The result is +2 degrees in the slab temp already. Each storm we see how things are gong and are making minor adjustments. Being able to see the readings sure makes a big difference.
