How is this formed? Simple as warm air off the ocean meeting cooler air from the north?

It may not be a true marine layer like you get off the coast of California, but there is clearly a division in the air masses. Cloudy to the east and clear to the west. Cool and moist air from the ocean versus drier continental air.

A couple years ago a stronger marine layer backed up along the Green Mountains in VT. To the east it was cloudy and cool, to the west it was clear, warm and very windy.

Waterfall clouds were pouring through the Green Mountain gaps. Quite a site for New England.

Hmmm, maybe we need some additional web cameras sprinkled around the peaks.

No, the waterfall clouds spill over the mountains, warm and dry out. Sinking air warms as it compresses.
