I just caught up on my weekend reading of the forum posts. Rime ice - hiking in the cold - some snow. I spent my weekend sleeping on the beach (no tent just a sleeping bag) on an island off the coast of NC! Just a wee bit different weather.

Pictures are at
http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/nc/fall/20071013-cape-lookout/

I will get my Maine-NH fix in November on my next trip north.

Very nice, Brad. I especially like the early morning light in the first 20 or so. Good eye!

I like the early morning glow also. It is such special lighting for a picture.

Would have liked to have been there with the kids, they would have loved to have gone swimming.

Please save it for me. I will be in Maine for Vet's Day weekend!

We have color at the cabin. Here is an image from my deck camera taken a few minutes ago.

Autumn's colors burning on every side
They're summer's masterpiece... it's glory... it's pride
As each leaf falls... twisting, turning toward the ground
They gently remind us to look around
For soon all color shall fade away
To empty trees and shortness of day
For winters coat of white shall soon take hold
Replacing the crimson…the orange…the gold
And in our mind and hearts they will be
No more than a memory…

Thanks and yes it is very nice. By the way, at the bottom of the screen on the left it says Alarm in red. What does that mean?

The pictures I took on Saturday have now been uploaded to http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/nc/fall/20071027-nc-mtns/

The State Road 1238 mentioned in the pictures is about 14 miles long - down to one car wide at many points - and you do need high clearance 4-wheel drive. The terrain drops off steeply on both sides. In the spring it would be awesome when the rhododendron are in bloom.

Posted in another thread:

I went to see a hot air balloon event yesterday morning - but, it got fogged in. So, I headed to a few other spots in NC to take pictures (will upload them in a bit). Then this morning I was back at Statesville, NC for the balloons. Those pictures are at

http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/travels/2007/20071028-hot-air-balloon/

My favorite was taken looking inside the balloon at the top as it was being filled with hot air.

I did the chase-the-vans routine to try to get pictures as they got set up several miles from the airport. Then they flew across the airport, dropped down by an X marker, dropped a bean bag on the marker (closest gets extra points) and then on to the tie down area. And I went back to the airport to get pictures there. Amazing they have that much control.

I would love to go to an evening event. This was my first hot air balloon event. When I got in the car I was sweating because of all the running - between shots.

Brad, I love the picture of the mountain. It looks cool...almost like a huge slab of rock set on the slope of the hill. I'd love to hike up there.

That is Hawksbill Mt. There is a nice trail up that from a gravel road from the east. The summit is roughly 3,980 ft. Tablerock to the south has a 4 mile loop (3,876 ft for the summit - the closest you can get is about 100 ft from the summit on the trail). Shortoff Mt to the south has a approach from the south that is about 1.5 miles going in. It would be interesting to see what the views are from that side of the gorge.

Got to a Renaissance Faire outside Charlotte, NC yesterday. It was a good day to experiment with new lens. The pictures are at http://public.fotki.com/bradbradstreet/travels/2007/20071104-faire/

The lighting (or major shade) was quite a lot of trouble in taking pictures.

Great stuff as always, Brad! I didn't realize there was a statue of me and Emma there(#29). I'm surprised at the close resemblance to King Richard's Faire in Carver, Mass. I used to go every year. I have about a thousand pictures, someday I'll go through them and post on my website.

Many of the folks go from Faire to Faire up the east coast. So, it may be the same folks in Mass.

Here's to Emma.

Steve, it sounded like the people working this Faire started their season in the spring in Florida. I have the e-mail address of one of the vendors (mushroom lady) and she has promised to keep me informed about their 2008 schedule.
