I was just going to mention this.

I was actually in a bar and ESPN was on in the background with no sound. I noticed the screen scrolling with highlights of Hillary's career. I jokingly said to her that he must have died.

Hillary actually did some amazing charity work in the Khumbu region of Nepal.

You've been reading too many political flyers. :)

I can't compete with that.

The guy had guts. And serious lungs. I've been to 14,200ft and it was *not* easy to climb. He was twice that high. Amazing.

New Zealand will give him a state funeral.

A sad day - but certainly a life well lived.

There was a good piece on his life on NPR this morning. I hadn't realized all of the things that he had done besides climbing Everest. Amazing life as both and adventurer and a humanitarian. 88 very full years. RIP Sir Edmund - you won't be forgotten.

Here's a link to the article in Time magazine about Sir Edmund's life. A good read. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1702543-1,00.html

I found it rather odd that they would televise his funeral on the news. I'd prefer to see a nice documentary about his achievements, including work outside of his Everest climbs.

It was televised all over New Zealand. He had a state funeral, he was a national hero and icon. He's on the NZ $5 bill.

For instance, when a president dies in the US, they get a state funeral. From recent memory, I think Rosa Parks' was offered a state funeral. Its a big deal in the US and in NZ.
