Lets start up a February contest!

How many inches of snow will fall on the summit of Mt Washington in February 2008? The official scorekeeper is the monthly F6 report posted at http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/f6/

The deadline for getting your guesses in is midnight February 4th.

I'll start it off

23.4" of snow (now we'll get a ton because I estimated low)

51 for me,

why? because only saying "51 for me was too short a message to post

mtruman

I'll go with 42" (because the answer to anything truly important is always 42)

Rich

I'll go with 47.6". That's the average for February in leap-years since 1948 (as far back as my data goes). ;)

Phil did predict 6 more weeks of winter so, bring on the snow!!

I'll go with the rediculously low educated guess of 16". This is the standard distance between joists, studs and rafters. The last being those that hold up your roof. Something tells me this does not hold true on The Rockpile. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what is the distance between rafters up there?

I believe it is arms length. That way those guys can swing from them when they have nothing to do.:)

They're crowding me out.

Let's start a side wager; whoever's age is closest to the snow total wins.

That would put me at a distinct disadvantage. They don't record snow depths that high.

How about we use the square root of your age. That should help some!:)

Don't forget October of 2005; the summit had nearly 80 inches of show. Or a "Dick Clark Age" as they like to say. From the F-6 so far (and the snow on the ground this morning), we are well on our way to a big February precip total.

spyboy

What's the conversion from rain to snow? 1 inch rain = 10 inches of snow?

If it was colder, we'd be buried right now!

Mike D
02-06-2008, 10:44 PM
They turn the snow into water and then measure that to find the water equivalent.

33 inches on the month so far...

Which means a split pot if we ended right now...
But it doesn't!

Spyboy-"What's the conversion from rain to snow? 1 inch rain = 10 inches of snow?"As Mike D said, "They turn the snow into water and then measure that to find the water equivalent."

The procedure used to find the water equivalence of snow is to get the precip can and measure the snow in the can in 5 spots then average and record this reading. Next a measured amount of hot water is poured into the can to melt the snow. After the snow is totally melted, the water is poured back into the graduated cylinder (basically a very tall calibrated beaker) and the reading of the level, minus the amount of water added to melt the snow, is recorded to give the water equivalence of the snow in inches.

Is there a prize included in this months contest or just honorable mention?:)

Brad

A very honorable mention. We will not mention beforehand what might be mentioned honorably.

Sounds nice.

I think we need to subtract something off the snow total to compensate for all that rain. ;)

Wohoo! 5 inches yesterday and from the look of the cams it is still coming, I was beginning to think I had been just wistfully thinking of 51 inches. With 3 more days to report, I might just make it. Virtual drinks all around!

mtruman
02-27-2008, 09:00 AM
So sometime during the day yesterday the total was at 42". Does that count for anything?

Ended up at 44.3 yesterday with some more overnight and a bit more forecast today. The 44.5" entry is starting to look pretty good...

Then again, if we take Bill O's suggestion of subtracting something for the rain I could be back in the running

Steve M
02-27-2008, 09:44 AM

Holding at 46.9 and unless snow can fall from clear skies, judging from the web cams, it looks like that is where it will stay.

Skies may be clear right now, but that is going to change. There is a chance that we see some of the snow from the impending storm before midnight.
