Here's an interesting GPS, could be fun to watch people during STP (if anyone actually has it)

no screen, it's just a gps data logger, but can transmit coordinates for updates (viewable on google maps), as well as emergencies & 911 calls.

I saw the ad for this in the current edition of Backpacker this week. Looks interesting. Lower cost (even with the $100/yr service fee) than a PLB or sat phone in it's use as a safety device. The tracking and recording location in real time for access on the web is really cool. It would defininitely be good to see some of the STP participants try them out.

I saw the ad in Backpacker and a write-up in the Wall Street Journal today.

The unit is much more affordable than the other PLB's, but it has an ongoing cost associated with it. The real-time tracking costs more than the $100 per year.

Seems like a cool gadget if you get out and use it.

yeah, I've been looking at this unit too, but i'm not sure I'm willing to make the investment - yet. Yes, it is a more affordable PLB and IS useful as one, but I'd like to see some more features. Some simple SMS to begin would be great. Think I'll wait for v2.
