Yesterday I went to Washington, DC to get some night pictures. The forecast was cold, some snow - but clearing after midnight. It turned out to clear just as the moon was rising over Jefferson Memorial.

To prep for the trip I had picked up a compass at REI - then got the reading for the moonrise on the night of the Lunar Eclipse. So, I was able to judge where I needed to be around the Tidal Basin to get the picture I wanted. This all worked out well. With little traffic and few folks out at that hour I got 2-3 days of sightseeing in over one night.

Sweet pics, Brad. Which camera were you using?

Brad

I have an old Canon D60. Many of the pictures were taken with a wide angle - low light - lens. A few were with normal zoom lens. The moon shot was the 500mm to get right in there. Many of the pictures were 5 second exposures. Some were 25 seconds.

The new tripod was a disappointment. Took it out of the box and the first time to use it a leg fell off. Went at lunch to get a different one.

Just from looking at those shots it's seems there is very little (if any) noise, even in the sky. How do the full res images look?

Is that the Vietnam Wall? I have only seen the Moving Wall, and believe me, it is quite moving, no pun intended!

"Which camera were you using?"

Although I too like to know what camera shots are made with, it is the photographer, not the camera that matters. This is especially true with Brad's images.

Thanks for the comments. This was a trip to take night shots and figure out what worked and how to do things. I was pleased with the results.

Some of the longer exposure pictures were not as sharp as I would like. The key (as I learned from my son) is to use ISO 100. Then work the other settings around that to get the picture. Most were 5 second exposures. An example is the moon rising over Jefferson memorial. Maybe this link will give the larger file for you.

No - it is not the full size version. But it should give an idea.

To the right of the images on Fotki the EXIF information is available which is handy to use to see what the settings were.

The Vietnam Vet's Wall is amazing to see. I could have sat there a lot longer and just looked and thought about it all. But, I was getting cold and did not have a box of Kleenex handy. The Wall pictures were 25 second exposures because it was so dark there.

Here is one I like

A very nice day. But, not as much snow as I was hoping for. Went to Blowing Rock, NC and then north through the NC mountains into VA. The pictures are at

I got to the NC Zoo first thing this morning and stayed till 2PM. There are 2 main sections (North America and Africa). One section is 2 miles of walking and the other is 3 miles. Getting back to the car is another 2 miles. All that is on hard payment trails. So, my feet are tired.

Some of the animals like this red wolf would not stand still for pictures.

The Miami Zoo has 2 person bikes with canopies for rent. Too bad zoos won't let you bring your own bike in, I would love to ride around on my beach cruiser.

Great shot of the wolf!

Spent yesterday in the NC mountains taking pictures of flowers and waterfalls - at The Biltmore Estate. The weather forecast was for rain and not a real nice day. They were wrong - it was really nice. A little windy to be taking pictures of flowers as they would not sit still. The pictures are at

Thank you Charlie. It is hard to see but the waterfall picture is zoomed in all the way at 300mm. I liked the detail and mixture of elements.

I checked and cleaned the sensor - but, I think the issue is with the old 500mm zoom lens. I think an inside lens is dirty.

You can take one of those camera puffers and blow air across the lens to remove debris. I hate switching lenses on my cameras for that reason, junk will get in there. I try to keep the exposed lenses facing down but it's not always possible depending on where you are when you're swapping.

We will see how pictures taken today come out. We had an office outing and used the 135mm, 300mm and the 500mm zoom lens. Standing at the outfield fence taking pictures of the batter face on was cool.

The Biltmore has a special display on now called the "Floral Carpet". It is 144,000 plants set out in a special pattern. This was the major reason I wanted to get there this morning to take pictures of it. Here are a few pictures from the album at

And then I found a butterfly.

Well, a couple of fellows from the office and i went to an air show yesterday at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, VA. The show way great but the weather was on the edge of raining. with the overcast skies the pictures were not great.

With the bad weather several events were not done. But it was still a good day.

My daughter and I went to England for the weekend. Friday was visiting Blenheim Palace in a little village of Woodstock. Nice full English breakfast at a small pub there to start the day. The palace is where Churchill was born - by accident. His mother was visiting family and Winston came early. There are Churchill exhibits and also a new section showing life in the times of 9 different Dukes. Very well done.

Saturday was our church meeting and after we said bye to friends we headed 3 1/2 hour drive SW to Devon. Stayed at a small B&B up on a hill on a 1 car wide but 2-way traffic road with no street lights and houses with no numbers - but we were looking for #10. Great place to stay.

Sunday after another good English breakfast we went to friends' house and then toured Devon with them. The coast is varied with rocky beaches, high cliffs and rolling "hills". We had excellent fish & chips at a pub on the beach at Torcross. That beach is where the Yanks practiced landings to get ready for D-Day. Up the coast to small villages, watched surfers a bit, and walked on several 2-way streets just wide enough for 2 of us to walk up side by side. The last stop was at the small town of Dartmouth which had all sorts of sail boats in he harbor.
