Some of the videos seem to start off "rocky" and then smooth out. Like the North sunset and the Presidentials sunset. Mike, can you check to see if they are grabbing all the images in the time period?

For some reason, undoubtedly rooted in the minutiae of mpeg encoding, the timelapses seem to play choppily when you first press play in the plugin, especially while they are still downloading. Firefox allows you to save the movie to your computer (ctrl+F), where you can play it in Windows Media Player, Quicktime, VLC or other program. They play much more smoothly outside of a browser plugin, but failing that, wait until it is fully downloaded before playing.

The North image is so clear this morning BEFORE sunrise. It really looks nice.

The North and West sunrises today were nice. The West one started in the dark. But, the North image started and it was light outside - because of the new camera's low light capability.

On the Tuckerman Zoom you can see a defined trail in the snow on the Upper Snowfields. No visible activity in Tucks though.

I thought you did it Brad. Your first caption, "So, we had a fire throwing...."
was. I didn't realize it was actually one of the cam views. It was foggy this morning so I didn't look.

I have a feeling somebody named Mike did it. Let's call him Mike D for short.

Okay - to insert an image in one of these posts you copy the URL of the image and then paste it in the post with in front of the URL and after the URL with no spaces.

So, to do this for an image posted to the Fotki archive, look at the image (not the whole page of thumbnails).

Under the image is a button "Share Photo" - click it.

The first option is "Image URL for use on other sites:" and there is a URL under that. This is the URL to copy to your clipboard. CTRL-C will copy what you have highlighted.

Then in the post to the forum enter
http://images40.fotki.com/v1249/photos/1/1002902/6529616/20080813_062112_ravines-vi.jpg with no spaces and the image will be in the post. CTRL-V will do the paste for you.

Also, the part I have highlighted in red can be done for you if you wish. If you notice while you are creating a post you will see at the top, almost in the middle, second row down is a yellow square box that looks like mountains with the moon over it. If you click on it a box will open up where you can paste the URL into. All it does is saves the steps of coding using the tags, whichever is easier for you.

This is a nice time of year for webcam imagery: the air tends to be clear, the sky blue, and the peaks white.

It appears Bretton Woods has seen its first icing of the season.

On a technical note: the Ravines sunrise was not captured this morning because of ice on the far-end antenna. I boosted the transmit power, which helped the connection.

For you MWO members out there, the cloud activity to the west was so interesting this morning that I couldn't resist capturing another timelapse. The actual sunrise timelapse was nice, but far short of what that cam often captures. So, please check out the "sunrise" (actually a late morning timelapse) from the West. Please don't worry about the cloudy thumbnails, because there is dynamic, multi-layer cloud action during the first half of the video.

Just to clear this up: The summit lost internet at that time due to heavy glaze icing mixed with winds from the southeast, which is the direction our radio dish is aimed to get internet wirelessly in the valley. About four hours later, a huge chunk fell off and temperatures dropped quickly keeping things from reglazing and we got the net back.

The 2008 camera images have been archived off into their respective folders in the 2008 area. The images now are flowing to a 2009 folder and will work as they did last year.

They are at http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2009

But, an easer way to get to the most recent archived images is to go to http://whatsnew.fotki.com/MWO/

We now have over 2 years of archived web camera and Conditions images. Do we need to keep anything from 2006 now? Or keep on saving them all?

I think because what you can see of these towns from the summit are well to the right (east) of Mt. Madison and the camera hasn't been pointed over that way for some time.

Actually, you cannot see most of the lights of Gorham from here. Those are the lights of Berlin, NH.

The camera is facing more east as we have had to do a few repairs to the box it is cased in and have forgotten to align them on our clear days due to the past few days being busy. We will try to get to them next time we clear. At least it is still north. Just think of it as going from magnetic north to true north or the other way around (I get them mixed up).

Thanks for the correction. Berlin seems so much closer from that vantage point. Although it would make sense because Berlin would be much more lit up than Gorham.

The MWO web site says the microwave link is down due to snow - and they are going to fix it. So, no images being updated right now. One alternative (Plan A) might be to cause the snow to stop. They are probably working on Plan B. Plan C is to move the mountain closer to N Conway. Hopefully Plan B works. Or maybe they are still working on Plan A.

Microwave, shmicrowave. ;-) How about getting that little town on the cog side to upgrade their internet? Then you can use your connections down there for weather proof communications (at least for the summit cam and summit weather info - you could even run phone communications thru it). The MW Hotel offers guests high speed internet - could MWO work out a deal with them to share their connection? The power line or fiber line that runs under the cog could each carry high speed internet (might need repeaters, but they can do it). If all of that is wiggity wash, I vote for option A .. stop the snow. I think you guys have enough already.

Patrad Fischroy
01-29-2009, 10:35 AM
I read somewhere that they did have fiber in along with the new power. They just do not have the connection from the base of the cog out. Not knowing the bandwidth requirements it is difficult to say what connections are needed. The Hotel may have highspeed internet for its guests, but it could easily be swamped by the needs of the Obs if they are trying to stream video for the distance learning.

The good news is that there now is fiber from the summit to the base, which was installed as part of the powerline project. The State Park recently switched to that connection for their Internet needs.

The bad news is that it recently failed as well.

We're trying our best to navigate through this problem. Remember, the cover was ripped off our dish early this winter and we have been physically unable to fix it to this point.

We'll keep you all posted...

What an amazing organization! They got the microwave link fixed without our help. It is hard to believe, but they did it. Now, a part of the exercise was to rappel off the tower (why is it the IT guy had to do this?) to fix the part of the link that was not broken. But, it was good practice. Now that it is working again we can all sit back in our arm chairs and watch the web camera images.

The web camera image archiving process is not doing well with this storm last night. We have had multiple power outages at the cabin and another just hit. just as we think we have the server up and running another comes outage hits. These are all too short (less than 4 seconds) to have the generator kick in.

So, the process is not running right now. Once things settle down a bit we will work to get it running. Not much to see at the summit anyway today.

I have given up trying to fix the laptop hardware. I blew away Windows and installed it back at the factory installation - which I find is raw Windows and not even including the IBM Thinkpad stuff. Now I am in the process of reinstalling all the software - all of it. Ghost is your friend. Get it perfect and capture an image. Makes reinstalling much easier. After you reinstall and update, grab another image for next time.

Mark,

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads have the ability built in to produce complete images on a second hard disk or to a USB drive. However, if the software is really screwed up, then the image copy has the problems too. My system is soooo bad at this point it is easier to go back to a known good point (original factory installation) than select an image and maybe bring forward a problem.

No, I mean once you get the OS/drivers installed and patched, the a/v installed and patched, and whatever office suite you use installed and patched, *then* make an image so when you rebuild, you don't need to do all the installing and patching again. Once you have your laptop set up the way you want it, there's is that very short time when it's perfect, before you start installing/uninstalling extra software. That "perfect time" is when you want to grab the image.

Brad
04-01-2009, 04:18 PM

The Ravines camera image is showing snow on the mountain. Maybe it will clear more later today to see it better.

You probably will have to hit the F5 key to refresh the image if you're using Windows. There's another setting in under Tools, Internet Options where you should have it set to fetch new content automatically or to everytime you visit the site.

The images do not automatically refresh. They update on the web site every 15 minutes on the quarter hour - then you have to refresh the web page to see the new image. At the upper left of each image in the banner is the date and time of the image. If everything at the summit and the microwave link and the web server are working, then the date and time should be no more than 15 minutes old.

Wow, it has been there the past hour - moving slightly to the east each 15 minutes. This image is great.

It was even better to be there in person to see the sun rise while on the deck, though yesterday's sunrise was better.

They think because they have an SUV they can still drive 70 and not skid if they have to stop quickly.

The 2010 image archive is now open and running. The December 2009 albums are still out in the 2009 folder. In a few days I will move them to their respective albums.

We started the archive in September 2006 and now have 506,690 images in the archive.
