i love looking at the web cams and do not know how they work so ?

can the time that it takes a picture get shorter then 15 min .

and is there a way they can have a film strip type pictures of what it was like up there that day so when some one logs on at night we can see what it was like that day .

thanks Charlie

Web cameras normally take pictures like a movie camera - frames per second. The MWO site has elected to grab whatever the cameras see on the quarter hour and send that single image to the web site. We have to be satisfied with that image for 15 minutes. Then the new one appears. However, the camera is continuing to "see" what is going on - we just can not see the updates.

Some web sites do allow visitors to watch with more frequent updates. However, that increases the bandwidth they need from the web server to the Internet. That increase could be costly - especially to a non-profit organization - and one sitting on top of a remote mountain. Now, if you would like to contribute several thousands of dollars for higher bandwidth, I am sure we could get the Observatory to give us more frequent images.

I have a process running on a computer at my home in Maine that grabs the images as they change throughout the 24 hour day and sends the images to a Fotki.com photo web site I set up. My objective is to provide an archive of the pictures so we can go back and view what happened when we were not watching the web site directly. If all goes well, the updated images should be on the Fotki site within a few minutes of being updated. A link is provided below my signature.

I have 3 web cameras at my home which I can view through the Internet. Since I am viewing them live I can see boats going by on the lake - people walking down my driveway, etc. I also have elected to send an image from the driveway camera to my personal photo web site every minute or two.

One project I have been doing since last April is saving an image every day from the MWO Ravines camera. They are all at http://public.fotki.com/MWO/saved/2006/ravine-save/ They are currently in reverse order - most recent images are first. If you select the SlideShow function at the upper right it will spin back through them all. Once the year is over I will flip the sequence back to be in proper date order. And I will start saving the 2007 images.

I assume your check to the Observatory to improve the web camera network is "in the mail". It is one thing our membership donations go for.

A special thanks has to be extended for LL Bean's support specifically for the web camera network.
