Is the summit fox still around or did it depart for better living conditions?

There was one or more there when I was there at Thanksgiving. I think there have been some pictures over the winter. They sleep in their dens in the worst weather and come out looking for food when they can. I don't know for a fact where their den is, but I believe it is below treeline and they visit the summit to scavenge. I'm sure there are some nooks and crannies they can hide out in near the summit if they get caught in bad weather. I have found fur going under the cover to the old water tower for the Cog. I'm pretty sure it's not a permanent den.

The summit foxes are still here. There are three that I know of up here. The only reason I say three is that is the most I have seen together at once following me to the precipitation can at night. There may be more, it is hard to tell at times since they all start looking alike. They do reside under the old water tower platform but also in a fire exit tunnel we have built. These, like KD mentioned, are not their permanent residents, just places they go to rest. They live below treeline and come up to the summit. It is fun to watch them coming up at times. They dine off the rodents that live up top year round. They find scraps careless tourist leave about as well, we try to collect it all but we can't find all the trash. I have to say though, they are a lot more rare in the summer than the winter. They are fearful of mass gatherings of people it seems. The only times they come up in the summer is well after hours. In the winter though, they come right up to us. They are very curious but very skiddish at the same time.

Thanks for the report. It is nice to know they are thriving.

Currently up on the summit for my 2nd volunteer week. I did not see it, but one of the foxes was seen yesterday and today...

Ed has been spotted up on the summit roaming around - checking out the food! It was a wonderful site to behold. Has anyone gotten a picture of this rarely seen event?

Thanks Ed for being willing and able to step in and help.

Sorry for being so slow to respond... We actually saw two foxes while I was up there, and according to Ryan Knapp, there are at least 3 that have been seen at times...

Also, Brad's statement is incorrect - I was MAKING the food (along with John Bauhs, the other volunteer), and it was SO good, that the foxes came up to check it out... :-)
