Here's a little google map mashup I created. I drove around with my gps on, and took photos and panoramics (and video) and then pieced it all together for a nice little tour of the mountains.

What would be nice to collect is the GPS locations for the major trailheads and junctions. Then if someone gets into bad weather they could see where a specific junction is relative to where they are.

Once someone has the coordinates for a few places we should create a new thread here and start adding to the list.

With the new imagery on Google Maps or Google Earth you probably could pick most of the locations visually and extract the coordinates pretty accurately. Or if someone has a GPS track of multiple hikes IT could be done in much the same way. I am not familiar enough with the landscape to do the former, but if someone wants to send the latter to me I can play with it.

Another approach would be to use a software package like Delorme's TopoUSA.

I believe Topo USA uses 1:100,000 topo maps as its basemap, NG Topo uses 1:24,000 maps for it. They are much better for that in my opinion, Delorme does have a topo mapping product based on the 1:24,000 scale maps, but I don't have any experience with it. Besides, I don't think that they offer the downloads like NG Topo does on its mapxchange.
And neither of them match up to Google Earth where the imagery resolution is good. Especially for free.

Here is a list of some coordinates from points using TopoUSA.

Tuckerman's Ravine trail at route 16 = N44 15.440' / W71 15.159'

Junction of Tuckerman's Ravine & Huntington Ravine trails = N44 15.713' / W71 16.175'

Junction Tuckerman's Ravine & Lion Head trails = N44 15.582' / W71 16.883'

Junction Tuckerman's Ravine & Alpine Garden trails = N44 15.778' / W71 18.019'

Junction at top of Tuckerman's Ravine trail = N44 15.800' / W71 18.145'

Here is a file for Google Earth that shows the points that Brad posted.
.

oops, I can't attach a non picture file here. Is there a way to share this info? I suppose I could just change the extension, but I would like a comment from the moderator before I go that route. Instead here is a view of the data set, low res and all but the flavor is there.
