I know the question seems sort of unrelated.. but I've been playing with the new iPhone/Apple SDK and created a quick little widget for the Dashboard.

It's a countdown clock until the official send off for the big hike!

Version 1.0. I still need to clean it up a little. Let me know what you think or have any other ideas for it.

That looks cool.

Any way to go out to .01 seconds? Its fun to watch those move really quick.

Now that I think about it, you need to make a little app w/ a transparent window that stays in the foreground, so that I don't have to switch to Dashboard to see the countdown... :-)

A Yahoo widget would be cool to do this.

Windows Vista has a sidebar feature someone could create this for. But, doing a Yahoo Widget would run on any Windows version.

Spyboy? Any chance you could create this? It would be a great way for you to learn about widgets! Your move is done and you have nothing to do. :-)

I haven't played with the Yahoo widgets, but maybe a Flash version could work. If anyone has a large version of the hiker logo, I'd like to make it a little nicer looking. The ones on the website are too low res to do a tracing and get an EPS out of.

Yahoo Widgets should be pretty easy to work with. What is nice is they are low overhead when running. I have several that load automatically on my laptop. The desktop at home in Maine uses a widget to grab the MWO images as they change - then they flow into the archiving process.

Version 1.1

Did a couple tiny updates.

> STP logo on front panel will now launch browser and go to STP homepage
> Changed the MWO logo to a smaller version on the back panel and it link to the MWO home page
> Changed the credit text on the back

Download: StP08.zip (http://www.downeymillgroup.com/stp08/StP08.zip)

I'd like to figure out how to have a text field where you could enter your hiker name on the back, then when you click on the logo on the front, it goes to your sponsorship page.

BlueDog--

I just emailed you several versions of the STP logo... hopefully they will help. What you've already done is very, very cool.

As a non-Mac user, I hope someone out there can put together a Yahoo widget like that! If so, we'll give you much credit and offer it through the STP site (with your OK, of course!). Same goes for the Mac version, if you're open to it.

My disclaimer is that I'm saying all this without checking with our esteemed IT staff... who may come back to me and say "We can't do that! Are you crazy?"

I'll see if Matt wants to write one (or copy the Mac one ;) )

btw Here's the Vista gadget for the webcams..

http://www.devclarity.com/blog/post/Vista-Sidebar-Gadget.aspx

It caches the MWO cams every 15 minutes to his server, so users running the app are hitting Matt's server, not MWO (for bandwidth savings)

I cheated a bit and created a STP skin for one of the existing Yahoo! widgets. Here's the result:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/mtruman42/SC2khs8KoGI/AAAAAAAABs4/sKmAtB22hQI/s288/SeekThePeakTimer.jpg

You can download the base widget here: http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/atomic-timer

When the widget is installed you then load this theme file (from the widget configuration menu): http://mtruman42.googlepages.com/SeekThePeak.zip

Resize the widget to suit your preferences via the "Timer Size" option in the Widget Preferences page. Lots of other stuff that can be tweaked in this widget as well. Enjoy!

Version 1.3 now available!

I can't seem to stop fiddling around with this, but here's the latest version. As always, comments, suggestions, etc are more than welcome.

What's New
> Much cleaner version of the StP logo on the front panel (many thanks Scot!)
> Design 'enhanced' with the hiking boot prints in the background
> Had to add a little logo for the company I work for (keeps the big boss happy)

Here's the really cool one...

>Flip to the back panel and enter your profile name as it is on the StP site in the field provided. When you flip back to the front panel, clicking on the StP logo will now take you straight to your page. This variable should stay until you enter a new name.

Version 1.5

Quick update. Added an icon that will appear in the Dashboard dock and the Widget Manager panel. I've also changed the widget name from "StP08" to "Seek the Peak" so you may have to delete previous versions as I think it will think they are two different ones now.

Thanks! Sometimes when I get a new app to play with I get a little hyperfocused seeing what I can do with it. :)

I grabbed a PNG file of the default image if you want to try to use it for the yahoo widget. If you want the pieces and parts for it, let me know.

Sure - send the the pieces that you've got and I'll fool around with a better version for the Yahoo! widget. My email is in my profile.

I know what you mean about getting hyperfocused working on a new app - I'm the same way myself...

I created a version of the Yahoo! widget with the STP theme already loaded so that you don't need the extra step.

I'll upload new alternate themes if I get any better new images.

Sorry guys - the Yahoo widget engine does some weird stuff when you are modifying and retesting a widget on a single PC. There are remnants of the last configuration that stay around and this was causing it to work on my PC when I retested it but to fail on a new install (which I discovered myself this morning when I installed it on a second PC). I'm pretty sure that the version that is there now works. Same download location: http://mtruman42.googlepages.com/SeekThePeakWidget.zip

The name of the widget in the zip file is now STP.widget instead of "Seek The Peak.widget" which was necessary to (hopefully) avoid the repeat error for anyone who had tried to install the original bad version. Let me know if there are still issues.

Very frustrating! I've removed the bad version and won't put another one up until I'm sure it works. Thought this was going to be much easier than it has turned out to be.
Looks like actually doing STP itself may be the easier task

I've never used Windows, there are challenges? :D My widget was downloaded and working in about 30 seconds. Oh, sorry. :D

Somebody's signature says: "Mac users swear by their computers, Windows users swear at them."

How true. Good luck! I'm sure you'll get it.

I'm surprised that someone who likes the challenges of climbing mountains as much as you do isn't up to the challenge of using Windows. On the other hand, climbing mountains is a much more predictable experience (and a much more satisfying and enjoyable one).

I have however risen to the challenge and once again have managed to overcome adversity and create a working Windows application (at least according to my private tester - Brad). If anyone has problems with this version I'll forward you Bill Gates contact information and he can take it from there.

The current version is posted at: http://mtruman42.googlepages.com/SeekThePeakWidget.zip

I've also posted this on the Yahoo! Widgets site and it will hopefully be reviewed and released soon.

If anyone still has problems or would like to suggest any changes you can PM me or send me an email.

How about a screenshot of the latest Yahoo widget as well?

Unbelieveable - after all the attention on getting the stupid thing to work I set the wrong date (it is set for July 27th). :o

This can be changed in the preferences screen. I've posted a new version, but for those that have already installed the last one you have to change the preferences manually since new versions of Yahoo! widgets don't override existing prefs. If I'm as successful in the hike as I have been doing this I'll probably trip and break my leg getting out of the car (or better yet, show up on the 27th).

Here's the shot of the current version - highlighted against the appropriate wallpaper:
