Looking for any known coordinates that people have that I can put into my GPS prior to hitting the trails this weekend. I believe we (Great ghost and I) are heading up Lions head and if all goes well observing some on the flowers while we summit then head down to Lake of the Clouds where we will be spending the night. If any one has any points please let me know. Thanks Kevin (meridenff)

A really good source for GPS coordinates is Google Earth (which you can download for free). It has reasonably good approximations of most of the White Mountain trails and it displays the GPS coordinate for whatever point your cursor is on. Good way to get trail junctions and other general points of interest. I can also send you a KMZ file for your route (Tuckermans to Lions Head to Summit to Lakes by the sound of it) which will give the exact route in Google Earth. The AMC White Mountain Guide Online supports exporting a KMZ of any route and they have all the trails GPS mapped exactly. If you'd like it just send me a PM with your email.

OK I can't seem to find where on the AMC Guide Online site that shows the GPS points. I did everything I can think of. I am able to see the maps but can't seem to find the pointer to show me the coordinates. Thanks for the help. Kevin

I emailed Kevin the info, but figured I'd post it here since I thought others might be interested in the method. I uploaded the files that are referenced and included the links as well. Also includes another plug for the WMGOnline which as many of you already know I'm a big fan of...

Here's the info.

The first file is a PDF with the trip route saved from WMGOnline.com It actually has the GPS points for all of the trail junctions so you could just use those. Download it here: http://mtruman42.googlepages.com/PinkhamtoLakes.pdf

The second is the data file for Google Earth (the .KMZ file). You can get Google Earth here: http://earth.google.com/. Once you install it just open the .KMZ file and you will have the route. You can put the cursor on any point on the route (or elsewhere) and it will display the GPS coordinates. Download KMZ file here: http://mtruman42.googlepages.com/PinkhamtoLakes.kmz
A cool feature of Google Earth is that it now includes geolocated photos uploaded to Panoramio that are indicated by tags on the map. Would be great for folks that are posting the awesome hike photos here to upload some good ones to Panoramio so that we can see them on the map when doing trip planning. (Which I guess means I should post some of my own).

Another option is to get the KMZ to GPX converter located here: http://www.mcrenox.com.ar/ge2gpx/ This will read the Google Earth route file and produce a GPS coordinate file for all waypoints in GPX format that is used by most GPS units.

Finally, if you want to be able to create trips yourself you can subscribe to the AMC White Mountain Guide Online here: http://www.wmgonline.org/
The subscription cost $12/yr for AMC members and $15/yr for non-members. It contains all of the trails with the full descriptions and information that are in the printed White Mountain Guide. You can interactively create trips using your own routes or the suggested routes from the guide. The routes can then be printed in the format that's in the PDF I attached or exported for viewing in Google Earth. I use this tool constantly for trip planning and think it is more than worth the $12. You can also get a free account and try out many of the features.

If folks here do decide to join please post your TRs there as well as here. Would really like to see that feature take off more. You don't have to be a paid subscriber to post TRs or trail conditions.
