There are literally hundreds of trails, and dozens in the Tamworth area. The best way to learn about them is the AMC White Mountain Guide. This includes maps and descriptions of most of the trails in the White Mountains. It will give suggested hikes in the categories of easy, moderate and strenuous for different regions of the mountains. It will give accurate descriptions of how to find the trailheads, how long the hike is and how much elevation gain there is.

You can help the Obs by buying one here:

Or, you can cross the Kancamagus to the town of Lincoln and visit one of the men who is responsible for compiling it. Steve Smith has a bookshop called "The Mountain Wanderer" on Rte. 112 in downtown Lincoln. While you're there he will be glad to answer any and all questions you may have. You will be hard pressed to meet anyone who knows more about the White Mountains, though there are a few.

Also, if you decide on a particular hike you can check into this forum and ask about it. There are several knowledgeable members who can probably answer your questions.

Check out Backpacker Magazines (http://www.backpacker.com/) web site. They've recently rebuilt it with lots of nice trail info.
