I can't say that I've hiked nearly as much as many of you, but South Baldface is one that I've done a couple of times. Both times were in dry conditions (thankfully) and both times I marveled at the trail as I neared the top.

I don't know if there are any books out there about trail maintenance or cairns or the evolution of White Mountain trails, but the trail up South Baldface was so impressive. As you near the top after a day of scrambling, the trail turns into a rock-lined path, almost resembing a courtyard, complete with stone benches and impressive cairns. It's been a few years, but I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "Wow. Who the hell took the time to line the path perfectly with rocks and build benches??"

It's one of those special places in the Whites. I'd be very interested in reading about how trail maintenance and how these trails evolve into art over time. It may sound corny, but that trail really is a work of art.

By the way-- Fantastic pics, as always.
