Fireworks

I normally watch fireworks from a boat and the options for taking pictures is real limited. Several weekends ago I was with a friend taking pictures at the NC Fairgrounds. In the evening there were fireworks and he showed me a different way of doing it which is great. Still tricky, but it can work well.

Use a tripod

Set the camera to BULB

Use a remote to control the shutter

Set the ISO to 100

We went to f22

Then when a streamer is going up press and hold the remote button to keep the shutter open - release it after the fireworks have burst.

A couple of other things.

Switch to manual focus at infinity

I use a wide angle lens to get more than I want - but it covers the bursts as they end up in different spots. then I can crop to picture the way I want. With the ISO of 100 you can crop and still have reasonable quality even though it is "low light".

Once I have the camera set I do not look through the viewfinder. I just press the shutter button when I want to start "recording" and watch just standing beside the camera and tripod.
