So, I can't seem to get enough of the mountain.
I've just signed up for one of the Summer EduTrips.
It sounds really neat.

Has anyone done the overnighter?
Are any forum members cooking on the summit Aug. 14/15?

Ah, you are in love - with the mountain. It has grabbed you with both hands and said - "you are mine". Let it happen and enjoy it for years!

I have not been on an overnight but the pictures I have seen are fantastic. I am not sure i would need to bring anything for sleeping as i would be up all night taking pictures.

Remember the Perseid meteor showers are at their peak on August 12 - 13. You may have a chance to see them when you are there.

I've slept on the summit a few nights.

I'm not sure what the gear list says, but you are sleeping in a bed so sheets and a blanket might be more comfortable than a 20 degree mummy bag.

I would make up my bed with regular sheets than use a Wal-mart sleeping bag as my blanket. Ear plugs will also help, you never know who is going to be in the room snoring.

Other than that have fun.

I climbed MW for the first time this year (at age 50)!
Actually, twice in 10 days.
It was incredible - I'm addicted.

Yay!!! This is going to be great!
I'm looking forward to meeting you.

I will be up during your edutrip but not as a guest but as one of the observers. And if you decide to stay up and pester the night observer, I will be that person as well. Hope the weather works out well for your trip. I will try my best to forecast something good.

I'll be one of the volunteers that week. I haven't been to the summit for too many years. Spent at lot of time in the northern Presidentials during my college years. Fortunately for the crew, I have been doing a lot of cooking. Really looking forward to my week. Maybe some meteors, a full moon, and the bike race all in the same week. What luck!

Oh! Those trips look awesome! The winter ones are really interesting looking, but I'm not very sure of myself on ice on the flat parts of Boston so I don't think I would do well on the summit in a storm. The summer ones though...might have to do my birthday up there next year ;)

Have fun, storygirll. Don't forget to bring a tripod if you have one to take great pictures for us to look at! :)

I love sharing with this group.
We're all different and yet still on the same page.

CALM . . . calm . . . calm.
Breathing - now under control.
Yeah, right.
Smiling :D ear-to-ear :D.

"Good weather" = wild storms or clear night skies - either works for me!
Ryan - I just might learn to drink coffee again to stay awake.
Do I need to bring anything? . . . cookies . . . whoopie pies . . . cheesecake?
Ohhhh . . . for a nice sunrise. Now I'm just being greedy.

Photos would be a nice "perk".
I will need someone to get a couple of shots of me reading in unlikely places for my elementary school students.
Mrs. T. is reading where???

Busy weekend - chat again on Tues.
(If I can stay away).

Good that you are flexible on your definition of "good weather." I am banned from saying those words on the radio stations now because people were complaining (and by "people" I mean one or two people but since it is radio, we have to go with the lowest common denominator).

You don't have to drink coffee, some people are so pumped to be up here, they stay up naturally.

As for bringing anything to eat up, that is up to you. We will eat just about anything sweet or otherwise. I would say cookies or something solid since that is easier to pack than a pie. But if you decide to bring something, it does need to be made prior to coming up as Edutrippers are not encouraged (or allowed for the most part) to cook or bake while up here for safety reasons plus it distracts from the educational aspect of the trip.

yes you take a hike from the top on a trail that the people on the edu want to do and the people from MWO that go with you can tell you all about things on the trail

Rich
08-03-2008, 08:54 PM
Might be a hike to Lakes or Clay...maybe to the headwall or the Alpine garden. Everyone discusses their ability and a decision is made from there.

From the Edutrip write up:

"A special feature of some of the trips this year is the inclusion, weather permitting, of hiking trips to locations near the summit within the White Mountain National Forest. Depending on the weather, the forecast, participant interest, and experience, we may include excursions to places such as the Alpine Garden, Mount Clay, Lakes of the Clouds, and Lion Head. Please note the specific dates for these special offerings. Participants in these trips should have some prior hiking experience and some familiarity with the roughness and ruggedness of the high mountain trails, and should bring appropriate hiking clothing, footwear, and equipment."

Nice to meet both of you storygirll and billysinc! You certainly had a trip with great weather...

I too share your addictions to the Whites, and this mountain in particular. I also find it very enriching to mingle with like minded folks, and hear stories what draws folks to this peak...

Bill, I saw your pics. Fantastic...and your shot of the avalanche path is really impressive doccumentation! Please submits your favorite to the photojournal and I will post it...

Also, I saw you photographed the Air quality contraption. It is part of a joint research project with UNH to measure particulate pollution on the peak. The hose is hooked up to a vaccume which brings outside air through a filter which is changed manually daily.

Again, great to meet you both, and glad you had a good time!
