View Full Version : Contest - 1st Major Snow Recorded

Brad
08-01-2008, 09:55 AM
Lets start a new contest to guess the date of the first snow of the winter. Using the daily F6 report as the judge, what day will we have 1.0 inches of snow or more? The winner will be the closest guess either side of the actual date.

Brad
08-01-2008, 09:58 AM
My guess is October 15th.

Excellent contest idea...

For those interested, here's some normals and averages:
http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/normals.php

We have had an inch+ in August before, and it's common in September, but not the last two years, which took until October 14th and 20th respectively. In 2005, it took until the 30th or September. In 2002, 3.5 inches fell on September 11th.

So...this year...I'm going to bet on September 17th!

I might change my guess now that I re-read Brad's post. He said, "first snow of the winter". If he meant the true season then my guess goes to December 22. Brad? Did you mean the first snow since the 07-08 season? I know, I know...technical, huh!

I should have checked thanks JimS. I am trying to plan my 1st fall trip. I am very limited for time. I'm thinking next Saturday leave work at 6:00pm. Pinkham by 9:30pm. Hermits by 11:30 (changing time included) and it's dinner time. Get up early for a summit and back to the car for the ride to RI. My point is I hope to see some snow even if it means losing the GRAND PRIZE OF NOTHING and braging rights..

Brad
09-11-2008, 03:48 PM
Even with that schedule you probably would not see snow at the summit. There is way too much hot air up there with the Observers for small amounts of overnight snow to stay around long.

Well the weather channel web site says there is only a 20% chance of that R stuff tomorrow. My weather station says it is forecasting storms, and it is a clear sky with an ice crystal ring around the moon tonight (9-20) which indicates snow. What is going on with the weather??

EDIT: The dog decided he had to go out 5 minutes after I came back in, and the fog has now rolled in. So what I thought was an ice crystal ring was possibly light fog high in the sky before it rolled in.;) *sigh*

Oh, you mean we ought to have made educated guesses based on snowfalls of years past? I thought we were supposed to just pick any 'ole date, preferably after a few beers. Guess I'll change my strategy for next year. Congrats to whoever wins!

Don't change a thing, Trish! Your strategy is as good as any and probably more accurate. In fact, I think my local TV weatherman uses the same method to forecast the weather.

I wonder how they are taught in school how to use key words - like

probability
chance of
scattered
mostly
isolated
partly cloudy
thunderstorms developing
few showers
steady rain
soaking rain
evolving into
rain showers
flurries
mix of
possible
early
AM
PM
overnight
developing
times of
abundant
80%
times of
a stray thunderstorm
mainly

What is the difference between scattered thunderstorms and ones that are isolated? Is that different from having some stray thunderstorms wandering around?

These words were grabbed off real forecasts for 4 different locations. Well, they are mostly different. They are mainly in isolated states with a stray neighbor. Please note that the accuracy of these statements are approximately 2%.

At this point in the month we have had only 4 days with low temperature below freezing. And we are looking for snow? It is 48 degrees now and will be warm for a few days with rain.

The original rules say nothing about buying beer. But I am sure that KDT would be willing to share his price with you all. (I do not drink) BUT, he has not won yet. It does look like we will pass Joe and Mark on by. That will leave a very short list as we go into the home stretch.

Brad,

As I learned when taking a FEMA course for local emergency management duties, there are actually official definitions for forecast-related words like isolated, scattered, etc... You can look them up on the NWS site here:

Extended cold period with lows in the teens on the summit expected in the next few days. If snow showers pop up we could easily get an inch.

Either way, with freezing fog forecast for that period it will look like snow when the clouds clear.

October 1st F6 report - a trace of snow. The first trace for the season - but not enough for a winner.

"NJgail11 - Oct 1" is out for the date picked. But, could be a shared winner with "Rockin Rex - Oct 3" for October 2nd.

I am off for the weekend with my daughter to England. So, I will check back late on Monday to see how this is going.

There goes our planned Saturday Franconia Ridge hike. Alex and I aren't prepared for the forecasted wind speeds and cold. We'll hike a much less exposed set of trails instead.

Instead of beers, we could all buy each other hot chocolate.

Stay warm this weekend, folks!

So, 1st place is shared by NJgail11 and Rockin Rex. Congratulations.

On Friday my daughter and I went to Blenheim Palace just NW of Oxford. We had a church meeting west of London today (Saturday) in Cobham. Now we have driven to Newton Abbot in Devon for the night. Sunday we will wander around down here - not sure where as the forecast is rain. Then back to Cobham for Sunday night and flay back to NC Monday morning.
