Very sad event yesterday with 11 climbers on K2 being killed by an avalanche after having reached the summit. The reports vary but it appears that some were burried by the avalanche while others fell fell from the fixed ropes when they were severed by falling ice. The mountains certainly can bring both joy and tragedy.

Here's one of the more detailed accounts: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/08/03/pakistan.climbers/index.html?eref=ib_topstories

They weren't exactly taking a tour of the lollipop factory. We're talking about the world's best mountaineers near 28,000 descending one of the most difficult/dangerous mountains in the world.

I got the impression a serac broke free and swept across the fixed ropes when many people were attached to them. Not only were they swept away, but climbers still above the ropes were then trapped without any protection.

Imagine the media circus if this happened on Everest. Don't be surprised when this happens again on Rainier or Hood. Its happened in the past.

Wow, that's why I stick to just plain old fashioned hiking.
