View Full Version : Hiking gear.... kilt?

On the recent hike for the Flags, there were a few guys on Lafayette that hiked up in kilts. I've seen a couple more guys going this route.

The more I think about it, it seems like there's something to it. The wife seems to be in favor of the idea too, something about "having the legs for it." :)

What say my fellow hikers? Any guys here going with the kilt for hiking? Any other thoughts? Practical or trendy or just strange?

It would certainly give you good movement when rock scrambling. My only concern is the proper way of wearing a kilt and what you wear underneath.

If it is freedom of movement you are looking for look no further than Kevin's naked hiking on the 4K's

I've been wearing a kilt for a while. Your knees don't get caught in them like in shorts when you're climbing. Carry a poly-pro pair of long underwear for when the cold breeze blows across the moors and you're all set.

Otherwise, we true Scotsman wear nothing under our kilt. :)

I still prefer nudity.

Hey, hey! You're married!

Yeah, I'm aware of that, lol. Not trying to be a flirt, just a smart aleck. :p

My apologies, KDT, if that was too familiar. I saw the opportunity for a cheap joke, so I took it. I hope I didn't offend.

I've never yet been offended yet in my entire life... I'm always the offender! :)

After 3 days on the AT in MD and 4 days in Yosemite, this idea came back to mind. Well... the Potomac Celtic Festival was going on this weekend just down the road, so I stopped in to check it out. So, now I have myself a Utilikilt for hiking in! However, no promises for the ladies if you'll see it at STP yet. ;)

BlueDog - try one of these (http://www.sportkilt.com/category/52/Hiking-Kilt.html)- they're cheaper than UtiliKilt. I've been kicking the idea around myself (and strongly hinted about it for Father's Day)

10% off if you use the code FathersDay09 (and order this week)

Even better... one of my favorite gear makers, Mountain Hardwear, just added a hikers kilt (http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Product.aspx?top=1621&prod=39&cat=1665&viewAll=False) to their product line. MSRP - $50.
