I was driving from Laconia to Gilford on Route 3/11 (bypass) and saw a snowcapped peak way in the distance, could it have been Mt Washington?

I think I'll drive back over there tomorrow and snap some pix.

There's a spot in Laconia near where 11a and 11b intersect (I think I have the right Rte #'s), near Sawyers Ice Cream, where you can look across the bay and see MW. Nice view.

I was near there on the bypass, and higher up, so I guess I was right.

I need to find a clear spot around there to go take some shots tomorrow, since it's going to be sunny and clear.

If snow is what you saw, it must have been on Washington, unless you can see the Franconias from Gilford:

Unrelated, but neat effect:

Drove back over there today, you can see straight up the valleys when you pass the overpass on Route 3, heading down the hill towards Gilford (Laconia Airport).

I couldn't find a good spot to take a picture from, and even on Route 3, you only get a glipse for a moment, as the road turns, and Mt Washington appears from behind the other closer peaks (so I'm not sure if you'd see it from up on Gunstock or any of the surrounding hills).

I drove up Carriage road, but then there's a 1 mile hike to get to the who knows what (fire tower?) I didn't know this and wasn't prepared to hike, so I turned back after about 2/10th of a mile.

Do you mean Belknap Mountain? I keep meaning to head there, but haven't yet. You can see Mount Washington from Mount Major next door; I'm sure you could see it from Belknap.

You can see Washington from Belknap and Gunstock above the Ossipee Range on the east shore of Winnepesaukee. They are both excellent hikes. A great loop is park at the gate at the bottom of the carriage road in Gilford Village. Gunstock Trail is on the left a little ways down the road, white blazes. Up to Gunstock, then over to Belknap and down. Can be lengthened by going to Piper Mtn.

Kirk, the place you can get a great view is on Rte 11B just north of the intersection with Rte. 11 at a place called Sanders Bay in Laconia. Great view across the bay straight to Washington.

Excellent, I'll have to try that next week (heading to Jersey this weekend)

I drove back over to Gilford today and parked at the Yacht Club (or whatever that place is). Clean shot across the lake to the snow capped peak!

These are awesome! A completely different view of Mt Washington from what we usually see. Thanks for the persistence in getting over there at the perfect time.
