I was driving up the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday and got a good chance to take pictures of Mt Mitchell. Many folks here have probably never seen it - and it is very different from Mt Washington. It is not very rocky till you get to the summit. The picture below has a powerline cut that points to the summit.
The auto road - just a regular park road with some switchbacks - is not very steep. It comes in from the left and goes around the peaks to the left - past a ranger visitor cabin - to the large parking lot near the summit. The old tower has been torn down and a new visitor observation building is being built. It looks like it will have a large deck on the roof.

It is funny when you drive down for a while and come to a town that is at 4,500 feet elevation. You forget how high you are in this part of the state.
