View Full Version : Mt Mitchell in NC

I was driving up the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday and got a good chance to take pictures of Mt Mitchell. Many folks here have probably never seen it - and it is very different from Mt Washington. It is not very rocky till you get to the summit. The picture below has a powerline cut that points to the summit.

The auto road - just a regular park road with some switchbacks - is not very steep. It comes in from the left and goes around the peaks to the left - past a ranger visitor cabin - to the large parking lot near the summit. The old tower has been torn down and a new visitor observation building is being built. It looks like it will have a large deck on the roof.

Pictures from Saturday's drive are at

It is funny when you drive down for a while and come to a town that is at 4,500 feet elevation. You forget how high you are in this part of the state.

Brad, what are the distant mountains in picture #8202? Is that TN or NC?

That picture is of the Blue Ridge Parkway at one elevated section - in NC - looking SE towards Linville Falls area in NC. That whole area is quite wild with not much out there.

If you turn and look north, you see the Linn Cove Viaduct which is quite long and the pictures of it are famous. If you check a Blue Ridge Parkway map, this will pinpoint where I was.

Looking at Linn Cove Viaduct.

Parkway map of that section
