I was shopping for a new alpine axe, and checking out the newer ice tools when I spotted this ice tool for women....

I have never used an ice axe, and I know nothing about ice climbing.

So, that being said,

Why is there a need for a "women's" ice axe..? I wear "mens" hiking boots, half my hiking clothes are "mens." Why not just have unisex ice axes in different sizes..?

Again, I know nothing about ice climbing, so perhaps there's something I'm missing..?

It's all marketing.

Probably what happened is they were all bored and sitting around one day and said..... "We should make a slightly lighter weight ice tool, and say it's for women. We could sell a TON of em!! Yeah, let's make em!" ... and there they were born :D

You mean that women don't want all their gear in pink or Hello Kitty on it? :p

Perhaps you could just tell all those pansy women who might want that 'womens' ice axe to 'man up' and buy the regular model :D
