View Full Version : Contest: January Low Temperature

Bill O
12-26-2006, 11:38 AM
Here we go again. A new contest to guess/forecast January's low temperature on the summit of Mount Washington.

The winner will be the contestant who is closest to the actual low temperature of the month. Voting will close at 11:59pm on December 31st. You can change your number as much as you want until that time.

The contestant who is closest will win one framed 8"x10" photo from my Mount Washington Gallery (http://www.easternlight.net/). You get to pick which image you like the best. This is a limited edition series. Shipping is free to the United States, Canada may be a few dollars extra.

Hopefully somebody from the summit will give us the January normals and extremes.

I'll stay with -20F, same as December.

Edit: Since I don't want to deal with any ties I'll go with -17.

Edit again: If we do have a tie we'll have some sort of run-off that is yet to be determined. For the purpose of this contest we will use the low temperature out to one decimal place instead of rounding to a whole degree e.g: -16.9

I feel a huge Alberta clipper is going to hit the New England area in Jan. and we are going to expereience blizzard conditions and extreme low temps. Dont worry Brad,
If things go well, it will be us in the running by the time Jan 31 rolls around. There is going to be some very cold air breaking away from Canada and the Arctic area and that cold air will be sliding our way by the time I would say around Jan 15-19 area and it will be cold here, cold enough to make us in the contest, maybe, but you never know. All I know that it is going to get alot colder, probably more like normal temps for this time of year. We shall see. Should be a fun month:)

Rex,
That is pretty wacky isnt it. 60 degrees in Jan. Even here in southern NH it is above normal we had about 2 1/2 inches of snow last week and then some ice last night but it is all gone now. This week we may hit 50 degrees or a tad higher in Manchester.
I am all for including the wind chill in the temp, ha ha. :D

Doyle
01-05-2007, 08:46 PM
Well seeing how my temp of -35 was the coldest temp, I would say go for the wind chill factor :D , unless we have a major change in the weather pattern we will be looking at a low of about 0, which will be at night due to radiational cooling!!!

01-10-2007, 04:30 PM

I work in NC and tell stories about northern New England.

One is that locals tell you it is "50". Everyone knows it is "above zero".

They tell you it is "30" and of course, any dummy knows it is "below zero".

And they say "5" and it does not matter.

Hang in there - you will get plenty of winter over the next few years. :D
I am going to hold you that Brad, otherwise I may have to move to your place in Maine and hope they get more snow than 3 inches in SNH here:rolleyes:

That word was clearly out there in the open!

I am sure you will not have to wait for years anyway. In the winter of 2001/2002 we had solid ice on our lake in Maine on January 7th 2002. This was the latest we had seen. This year it was January 18th.

But in between we have had dates of December 6, 10, 15 and 22. So, cold and snow is coming.

I know, I know, just frustrating and the news out of KBOS isnt much better for the area. for the season .08 is being reported at KBOS and for the least amount of snow being reported so far for the season like this, the rest of the winter usually averages about 15 inches, like in 1989 I think was the last one. anyway I will be fine, LET IT SNOW!!
I think I got that right, :D

I like to hike back into Tuckermans in the winter to take pictures on a nice day. It seems the conditions are always pretty close to the same

temperature +5
wind chill -35

With the proper layers and having the ability to take pictures with a light glove layer, it is fine. Actually some of the days have been downright wonderful.

I have taken several friends back to do this - and even my 8 year old grandson. All were surprised how nice it was and the temperature was not a big deal.

Looks like today would have been a great day to climb Washington, or anything for that matter. Low winds and high temps. Yes, 6 sounds high to me. The videos are just awesome. On the west view you could see all the snow they were making at Bretton Woods blowing down through Crawford Notch. On the north view you could see clouds forming and dissapating over Jefferson and Adams. Was the wind blowing east to west? On the deck view you could see them making snow at Wildcat and people moving around on the deck, when the Cog and the Auto Road open back up it will be fun to watch the people milling around, although I guess sunrise will be early for that. Just awesome! Next best thing to seeing it live. I hope it encourages people to go see it in person, whether on edutrips or as volunteers, or better yet, as climbers. Thanks MWO!

-32F stands as of this morning's synoptic observation....but just barely. The low recorded is -35.7C which translates to -32.3F.

Breaking News!!!

The latest synoptic observation says the temperature hit -36.1C which converts to -33F.

I think we have a new front runner in the competion. I'm happy to annouce that there will be a prize for the runner-up, most likely a 5x7 unframed.

Edit: And a record low to top it off, not bad. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Do you have a link to this information?

Not really, its buried deep within the metar code the summit transmits to the NWS. In particular, every six hours they transmit the 6 hour high and low. Here is the code:

METAR KMWN 261755Z 30055G63KT 60SM BLSN BKN/// FEW000 FEW005 FEW030 FEW250 M34/M38 RMK TPS LWR BKN060 INTMT FZFG 11328 21361

The 2 indicates its the 6 hour low,the 1 indicates the following three numbers are negative, and the 361 is the temperature in C or 36.1.

Unfortunately the automated data aggregators aren't picking this code up for the latest ob because somebody forgot to put a space between the 11328 and 21361. It got sent to the NWS as 1132821361.

Oh, and Neil just mentioned this in the latest observer comment.

Ahhh so close!!! -35F Looks like I am running out of time. How do we handle the runner up? Since there are only 2 of us left. Are we doing the pick the lowest temparature without going under???? :)

As it stands right now Dave is the winner at -33F and Brad is the runner-up at -32F. Sorry Doyle, 2 degrees off is more than one degree off.

It doesn't look like there will be another run at the low in the next five days. Coldest I am seeing is about -20F on Tuesday. Just to be sure we'll hold off on the crowning ceremony until next month.

Considering I have no historic data - and no real knowledge of the weather - and no idea what I am doing talking to a bunch of weather dudes like you guys, I just grabbed a number out of the air - and came pretty close. But, the F6 data is not out yet. So, maybe there is a mistake in the above data. Or I can get the F6 fudged ...

But, I am still the official winner as of today. :-) The F6 still says -32 is the lowest. My glory is about to be crushed though.

It looks like the January contest is over, and Dave is the winner. Brad hung in there for awhile but he is going to have to settle for second place. Thanks for everyone who participated, and be sure to get your vote in for February. There are only a few hours left to vote in that contest.

Brad and Dave please pm me your photo choice and mailing address.
