View Full Version : Fuel consumption

I don't have a ton of winter backpacking experience, so my question is this.

What "should" I expect my per person daily fuel consumption to be.

1)Wisperlight International - White Gas - Heat Exchanger.
2)All camping will be done be below treeline or in a sheltered area - low wind.
3)Two freeze dried meals a day.
4)Melting snow for eating, drinking, sleeping.

Thanks folks.

Good question. I'll be watching for the answers. I always have way too much fuel with me. I just got an 11 oz MSR bottle because the 22 is much too large. But I haven't used my whisperlite much in the cold. The last time, it was in the low 30's. Only made coffee 2 mornings and one meal.

We were ice fishing this past Saturday and one of the guys was trying different types of fuel in his whisperlite international. It was less than 15 degrees out. Whatever he was trying didn't work. I will find out what it was. He couldn't even get it to light. Good thing we had other stoves with us!

OK, not to knock this forum, I love it, but there's only a few backpackers here. Maybe your answer will come from here, but a better source for this sort of question would be Views from the Top. If you're not familiar with it check it out:

Problem is you have to be sponsored to get on, so this is what I'll do. I'll post your question there, then put a link to the thread.

OK it's posted here, keep an eye on this thread:

Thanks KDT! Someone has already posted an answer. I had no idea that site existed. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.
