Since I'm totally jealous of all the great loon pictures in the other thread, I thought I'd start my own. I hung around the house this weekend and caught these two visiting my feeders.

Kevin, don't you have an image of a silouetted bird high in the air with clouds colored by a summer sunset? The image is in my memory but I forget where I saw it. I think it's yours.

All beautiful pictures. Of course I never have my camera ready when my wife fills the bird feeder. We do get some beautiful red Cardinals. Of couse we get about 3 times the amount of squrrels.I really like the owl picture great shot.
One of my favorite bird pictures. matter of fact, it is about my only bird picture.

More awesome pics here. I love the one from Tim (or is it Val) of the Grossbeak. Used to get these all the time in CT but I've never seen one since we've been in RI. Never see a Redpoll either - very cool.
What's the bird in your first shot Brad? Beautiful picture whatever he is.

The redpoll seems to be saying, "I'm in charge here, and don't anyone dare question my authority!"
The bird feeder in winter is an endless source of fascination. I always smile when I see the cardinals, who at first present a very dignified appearance, but then you catch them dribbling their seeds.

I went down to the water front and captured a few pictures. I don't know if these are Baby Loons or what maybe someone could tell me. There was a bunch coming closer and closer but a 5 man row boat came and scared them away:mad:. The first one is a seagull. I have more but figured I would post these.

Beautiful pictures Patrick. I absolutely love the Bald Eagle they are one of my favorites. That was is a great shot.
Thanks for the Link KDT and letting me know what they were. It was funny watching some of them because every time they would dive under the water and come up a Seagull would take off and land right on it making it dive again.I thought they were a really pretty bird.

Mark, I took these Bufflehead pictures on the Fairhaven bridge. there is some kind of club for boaters and there must have been at least 50-75 of them. I enjoyed watching them until the row boat came. It was funny how one would kinda sit up and flap its wings then they would all copy down the line like a bunch of kids.

I always wondered what the name of those little birds were, they look like baby seagulls.
My favorite beach is Wildwood NJ, when I stay I try to catch the sunrise each morning and walk the beach. The sun is beautiful when it starts to peak out of the ocean and all of those tiny birds run so fast with their little feet.

Nice work, Chris!
The first pic is excellent. Too bad you just barely clipped the wings of the second goose; otherwise it's a pro-level composition. It's a great capture. I like the way one goose's wings are extended forward and the other's is opposite. The shadows on the ice are an excellent compliment to the composition. The open beak and tongue also add a little interest. Nice photo!

you would have just shot an eagle! :)
Those "hawks" are bald eagles! The shape of the bird in the nest is definitely bald eagle. Then, the soaring, outstretched wings are those of an immature eagle. The fingers on the end of the wings is the give away. They don't get their bald (white) heads until they're about 5 yo. A parent returning to the nest with it's young is the most likely scenario.
Remember where you took those shots and go back in a month or so, they should be setting up house for another nesting season.
The ducks are Common Mergansers (http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Common_Merganser.html) and the close up is a male Hooded Merganser (http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Hooded_Merganser.html)

Were they both Downy's? the top o\ne looked a little like a Hairy Woodpecker, hard to tell with little info on the size. Either way, they are eitehr well fed or pretty cold and fluffed up.

I guess they could be the less abundant Hairy Woodpecker, it's hard to judge their size. The only way I even found out Hairys existed is seeing them simultaneously at the feeder where the size difference is obvious. Otherwise they appear identical to me. Seems more likely they are Downy to me.

Well, I went out this morning to take pictures of water fountains in the ponds here in NC. Not a single picture was worth saving. But, these were nice. I snapped several pictures of the heron flying and none were in focus.

This is an old picture I took about 3 years ago, this is the hawk that lives in the court house in New Haven. I've watched it a lot and got lucky this day. I have a bunch of photos from when he was perched on a ledge watching the pigeon to when he swooped down and caught him. This one is the best though.

Beutiful pictures brad.I have been trying to capture a blue heron that is around here but I never get a good shot. My daughter likes them.
I love that picture of the hawk with its dinner. Great shot Uncle Fester.
Several years ago here in NC my son got this picture of an Osprey with dinner. I was "driving" the boat to get as close as possible and not scare the bird. Bill was sitting on the wakeboard tower on the boat shooting as fast as the camera would go.

As of the time we left the campsite he had not made it back in the nest. Florida Wildlife Management was trying to help him. He is still too young to fly. I was amazed because he is huge.

I just looked in my bird book and I think it might be called a Muscovy Duck. If someone else knows for sure please correct me.There used to be another one there that had alot more of the red on its head but it was not there this year. I call it the Elvis Duck because of the way its feathers are combed back.

A couple of these guys have been hanging out in our back yard this week. I think that there is one adult and two juveniles (this is one of them). The adult is a bit lighter in color. Last night I walked out onto the deck and the two young ones were sitting either on the deck or the umbrella and flew up into the tree before I could get my camera. This morning this one was sitting on the umbrella when I came out and again flew up to the tree but in a visible spot this time. Hope I can get a shot of the adult as well. We think that they are Least Bitterns (or possibly American Bitterns). They've been sitting in the trees after dark and calling and we've been trying to ID them from the call.
Edit: After looking at more pictures this morning it looks more like a Green Heron than a Bittern. The problem is that the call doesn't sound right.

A couple of small ponds in the vicinity (but 1/4 to 1/2 mile away). There's a Great Blue Heron that hangs out at one of the ponds all the time but I haven't seen any others.
Here's a picture I found online of a juvenile Green Heron (unless it is incorrectly identified). Looks like he could be the brother of the ones in our yard...

So one day last year I found an abandoned baby bird. Abandoned as in mom was most definitely not coming back, I'll spare the details. Myself, being a more 'let nature take its course' just let it be. After all it was only about 2 or 3 days old. This was in April and the low for the night was going to be mid 20s.
Then I made the mistake of telling my wife. Who loves birds and is quite educated ornithological-ly speaking. Who decided to give birdie a warm place to pass on because rarely can you 'save' a baby bird. Then, upon closer inspection of the little dude we found that he was not a songbird and therefore had a crop, which makes feeding easier.
Little birdie survived quite well and became a big birdie. A mourning dove. Little dude also turned out to be a little dudette, lol. Little dudette is now a year and three quarters old.
We named her "Beaker" after the Muppet because when she was young she would talk to us by going 'meep meeeep meeeeeep.'
Beaker taught herself how to fly. We also played mourning dove coos for her and she taught herself how to coo...although she leaves off the last "ooo"...we don't know why.
Beaker sits with us when we are home, flys around the condo a bit but mainly sticks to walking. Mourning doves are ground birds anyway. She terrorizes our cat, which is hilarious. And she definitely knows we are both her flock, but she prefers me. Given the choice she will always fly to me over my wife. (I can call her with my finger or voice, the wife cannot) And if another male comes into the condo she will fly and land on his head and start pecking away in protest. It's sorta cute.
Beaker also greets each one of us in the morning after she hears us stir from bed with a coo. She also greets us when we come home with a coo. Interestingly she also does her best impression of me saying "hi" to her. I repeatedly would say "hi" in the same tone of voice over and over when she was little and I have figured out that her "honk" is the exact same pitch/tone of my "hi". So I will say "hi" and she will "onnh." "Hi?" "OOnnnh."
The most humorous thing she does is what we call "happy wing." If she's comfortable/nested near you and you get close, say her name, or otherwise address her she will move her wings slightly and quickly in happiness. Even a head scritch-scratch will be allowed if she's in a good mood.
The pic with her wing up is her sunning herself. She also takes nice warm showers with us, and she taught herself how to bathe in the sink too.

The one with the Swan is really cool exspecially with the egg in it. I am surprised she is not sitting on it. Just don't get to close to the nest. I tried getting a little closer once and they both came after me. YES I ran like the wind....

I went by the Osprey nest today on the way home and low and behold they are starting to nest again this year. I shot these with my new 70-200mm so I had to crop in and tomorrow I am going back with my 100-400mm so hopefully get in a little closer.

Thanks Anna and Snow Miser Yes they are majestic creatures. I stopped by today with my 100-400 lens and both were in the nest. It was very windy where they are and it was hard shooting and I did not have my tripod so alot did not meet my standards. (i am hard on myself)I really need to save for a 800 mm lens ;)(then divorce court:eek:) Please enjoy.

Had a chance to get over to one of my favorite spots -The Swansea Dam and manage to grab a couple of shots of our fine feathered friends.
First there was this friendly little sparow:

And then something I had never seen there before-A Baltimore Oriole!

Anna, I just love them!!
We had a couple nesting at my job by one of back doors. All were respectful of the nest, no one parked near it and the landscapers didn't bother it either. But of course there is always one in the crowd, it bothered one lady there who was complaining it was dirty and not healthy to have to around. She is an animal hater and actually admitted to me she intestinally trys to hit squirrels...
I made it known that from what I read up, it was illegal to touch the nest and the wild life and game commission would have to be called in.
Anyway the babies hatched on a Saturday, one lucky guy was working near the area and was able to watch it all happen. I wish he had my #, I would have loved to see it too....
