Last February, I made the hike up to the base of the Tuckerman Ravine. It was ideal because I'd never hiked in winter, and the trail was well traveled, packing the snow down.

Does anyone have some other suggestions of winter hikes that would be just as pleasant for a novice? Anywhere in the Whites is fine.

Welcome to the board. If you wish to go back to Pinkham Notch then I would try the Old Jackson Road behind PNVC out to Lowe's Bald Spot. If you stop in the visitor Center they can show you on the map. Also, across Rte. 16 from there is Lost Pond and Square Ledge. All easy hikes from the Joe Dodge Lodge/PNVC.

I would suggest this book from Steve Smith "Snowshoe Hikes in the White Mountains" :

If you're going to take up serious hiking in the Whites, then you absolutely need this, the White Mountain hiker's Bible:

There are so many good White Mountain winter hikes (for all levels of hikers) that it's hard to know where to begin. Browse through this forum (specifically the White Mountain Hikes) and look at the trip reports from this winter and last. There are many detailed reports with photos and you'll get a good idea of the difficulty as well. All the folks that post TRs here would certainly be glad to answer any specific questions on them as well. Welcome to the forum and happy hiking!
