That's a cold look. Makes you wonder how hard he is on subordinates.
I am getting in the car right now and will pass thru DC. I will stop and have a talk with Joe. He seems to need a good right-elbow man.
On a more serious vein, this morning and yesterday I went to Portland head Light to try to snag sunrise. Yesterday there was a bank of clouds over the ocean and the pictures were duds in my mind. Some interesting clouds, but no zip.
This morning it was warmer and less wind (16 MPH yesterday). Almost no clouds at all and the early morning light was really nice. A very different day.

Brad, what other lighthouses have you photographed?
One of my favorites is the Nubble Light near York, Maine.
Mike
I have not done many in Maine as I have not had the time to scout out shooting locations and work on the timing for good shots. I love the Breakwater Lighthouse up on Rockland. But, it is hard to do it justice. Two Lights down in Cape Elizabeth is nice, but I have not found an angle I like.
I have done several in NC and one cool one in St Augustine, FL. The NC lights are hard to get as they are just on sand dunes and in scrub.
This one of Two Lights could be interesting - but there are wires in the way

Brad, here's a few lighthouse pictures I've taken the past couple of years.
There's something about a lighthouse that's soothing to the soul.:)
Rockland Breakwater Light, Maine

Great pictures. Bass Harbor Light looks like an interesting place to visit. I like the long view of the breakwater in Rockland.
One of the painting we have in the cabin is of Springer Light. that is another that could be interesting to try to shoot.

Looks like this is now officially the lighthouse thread. Here are a few more:
This one is absolutely my favorite. Bass Harbor Light is reportedly the most photographed lighthouse in the world. We spent a week in Bass Harbor a few summers ago and went to the lighthouse for sunset almost every night. The setting and the sunset shots pretty much explain why.

I can see I need to get to Bass Harbor...
The best part about Bass Harbor is that it is on Mount Desert Island. Any excuse to get to Acadia is a good one in my book...
Pemaquid Point is also a really spectacular spot if you happen to be in that area. Hopefully the lighthouse is now unwrapped and back in business. So many beautiful Maine lighthouses.

Should be beautiful then. We've gone for a week at the end of August the last 2 years are have our reservations for the same week this year. A bit crazy then but we still love it. Have been a couple of times in the past in Sept and Oct and it is wonderful then. I'm sure June will be awesome too.

This is obviously why Bass Harbor Light is so popular to photograph. Another amazing shot Kevin. It is amazing how many different characters the same location can take on - each with it's own unique beauty. A fitting companion to you grandmother's poem.
Stopped at Meredith, NH town dock yesterday morning on my way from Maine to NC. I wanted to get pictures of sunrise, but it was warm and therefore foggy. The lights at the parking area cast an interesting tone on the fog and the little I could see.

Wonderful pictures Brad. I really like the first and third one.The third one is amazing I feel as I look it just draws your eyes right in. But It could be just me. Thanks for taking the time to post them. The ones on your site are really cool. With the fog and an orange glow to me gives it a kinda creepy or spooky feel. Great shots.
I was hoping for a frosty morning. Then I was going to walk out on the dock leaving footprints to draw your eye out even more. But, no frost.
When I shifted to f22 I did a shot at 1 minute, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 minutes watching the shift in image tone as the times got longer. I like the 6 and 7 minute versions. Once I would start the shoot I went in the car to stay comfortable which is why the Town Dock area is nice.

I love these dock shots. Particularly the first one (wonderful light and contrast) and the third one - "the dock to nowhere" which has quite a mystical quality. Are we going to be seeing some NC spring shots soon?
I might see about snagging some NC shots over the next few days. I am in paperwork catch-up mode right now. On Friday I head to St Louis for the NCAA Womens Basketball Semis and Finals. I am hoping for a nice evening to get Arch and Courthouse pictures.

Not so fast. ;) I'm looking forward to your pics. I think with a wider lens and better camera, you'll be able to get more interesting shots. These were taken years ago with a Sony DSC-P71 3.2MP Cybershot. I kept wishing I had a better camera. I haven't had a chance to get back there with more serious equipment. With the city as a backdrop, the possibilities are endless.

Chris,
I was working mostly with the wide angle lens. But, just before the sun came up I switched lens and aimed at the pier in the early morning light. With the longer exposure the lights turned to stars and the water smoothed out a bit. I was pleased with this one. Thanks.

I think it is harder to find a nice sunrise in FL than sunset. Many times there are clouds off in the ocean and the sunrise is muted.

Great photo Brad. So you were in our neck of the woods recently?
Yes, I was driving from NC to Maine last Wednesday and decided to hit Annapolis for sunrise. Well, I was there but the sunrise was not much to speak of. I did get a few pictures I like.
From there I was planning on getting to Pt Judith Light in RI then Beavertail Light at the southern end of Jamestown Island off Newport. Then on almost to Cape Cod - an open house in Canton - a quick computer repair job in Acton - and on to Maine. A long lunch in Westport, CT messed up the schedule - dropped the Pt Judith stop - and the quick computer task turned into a 2 day effort. Got to Maine at midnight Friday night.
I do like Annapolis. There are plenty of nice sights and it is a great walking town.

Brad,
That was some schedule you had. Annapolis is a nice town. We almost went there last weekend for the grand opening of a new EMS, but were sidetracked. By the way, we haven't had a sunrise in Baltimore since last week. It's been rain, rain, and more rain - forecast until this coming Sunday; according to our "expert":D weathermen.

Went for a walk tonight and came across a field with some really eerie ground fog rising. The full yellow moon was huge and rising just above the treeline. I was ready to cry because I had no camera or tripod. :(
We have lights along the pathways on our property and lights in the woods shining up into the trees. It makes for a nice shot at night.

Mark,
I know the feeling. I watched 2 deer cross the road ahead of me in the car yesterday - I snagged my hiking camera from the front seat to find the battery dead. So, I started to drive away and 2 more deer started to cross the road. Soooooo, I whipped out my cell phone and putting the camera out the car window got this picture.

I was outside Boston yesterday - so, stopped to take pictures at Portland head Light on the way down at sunrise.

I like the last light house to it looks as if it is a doll house with a light shined on it. Great capture.
That one was tough since it was hard to know if the lens was focused well or not. Another fellow aimed their car headlights on the lighthouse to light it up a bit. I waited (in the cold wind) till he was done and his lights were off before I took my pictures. That would be a nice spot for a moon lit night picture. Or a full moon rising. It is a good location since there are no wires in the way - at least at that hour of the night I did not see any.
Nice shots Brad. 'They' claim that Nubble lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse on the east coast, a stat that I find rather unbelievable considering all...but a neat stat. I personally find Portland head much more photogenic, and your sunrise shot of it is top of the line.
So question...was the gait open at sunrise? Did you have to walk in? Catching sunrise here is a must do for me, but haven't yet, out of lack of certainty about the rules and gates there...does sunrise to sunset mean sunrise to sunset?

It looks like 'They' also claim the same for Portland Head and Bass Harbor. Why can't 'They' make up their mind? Of course we can be sure of one thing - Brad will have pictures of them all. (Do I sense a trip to Bass Harbor in the near future?)
Jim,
I have been to Portland Head Light for sunrise shots several times. The gate has always been open. The first time I went I was very, very early and it was open then. There is handicap parking right by the lighthouse - and some of the slots on the right end of that parking area are regular parking. So, getting tri-pods and equipment out is no big deal.
To get to Nubble Light the computer had me going on a cut off from route 1 that turned out to be a private gravel road. Then it took me out on the northern side of the point. That road is not completely paved and is one car wide in places. The road on the southern side of the point is paved and in very good shape.
It looks like 'They' also claim the same for Portland Head and Bass Harbor. Why can't 'They' make up their mind? Of course we can be sure of one thing - Brad will have pictures of them all. (Do I sense a trip to Bass Harbor in the near future?)
Bass Harbor is a long ways away - but, I might be getting up there this summer. The pictures I have seen remind me of Marshall Point light up at Port Clyde.

Harvey had a great sense of humor. That image is a scan of a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 slide from a Rolleicord camera. I pulled it out to check it over and that got me going back through his old slides I had scanned a while ago. A friend and I may get some film for the camera and try shooting with it this summer to see what we can get.
Anyone have some fresh 120 film rolls, ASA 100 for prints hanging around they don't want?

Last Saturday Charlie, my son and I were out in the boat about to start early morning waterskiing when we saw something floating in the middle of the lake. We found out it was a complete dock section loose and just floating out there. It was clear it came from a local campground. So, we "towed" back and got it up on the beach.
Our towing approach was my son stood on the section with ski tow rope in hand and he skied it behind the boat.
Here is a picture Charlie took of it.

I have the Canon 70-300 IS equivalent. It goes down to f/4.0 and that is my biggest "issue" with it. I want to use it in situations where it just does not have enough light. The range is wonderful though - and light weight.

Mark, the dinner menu had a lot of great salads and a small selection of dinners. Mine was excellent, well prepared, and very good. I ate every speck of it I was so hungry. It was a lot better than most "nice" places to eat I have been to.
The sailboat picture was taken while sitting on a violently moving sailboat - using a 500mm lens trying to keep it level and aimed in the right direction - continuous shooting at 1/1,000's of a second - then cropped it in later. Ah, the wonders of digital.

This shot was a 30 second exposure. When I pull it up on my laptop you can see a little bit of star trails. So next time I get to the canal I might try a 20 second and see what it looks like. I also have a shot with a good size boat going by so I have the streaks from its lights but the boat went out of the shot by the time the exposure ended so all I have is the streaks.

Chris - having shot my fair share of nightscapes, I would guess you captured a plane's nav lights. I can't really tell in the posted image, but does your full size image show blinking or strobbing (sp?)?

The full size image does show maybe blinking and different colors.

The little ones are growing up. This one has lost his spots and red coat. Antlers are on the way. :)

Nice shot! Will his antlers get very long this winter, or is he still too young?

I don't actually know. I doubt I'll see him much longer, though. Once the leaves are gone, the deer stick to the deeper woods.

Don't know about the little ones, but we sometimes get deer roaming through in the winter. I usually toss out some feed corn with the birdseed. Never know who'll come around to eat.

Hemlock Bridge just before you get to Bridgton.

A few shots will get a lot better as the leaves start to change on the larger trees.

Very nice shots Brad. Classic New England fall. Looks like we've all forgotten the Fall Pictures (http://www.mountwashington.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5424) thread though. The foliage is beautiful up north now. I've got a few from this weekend that I'll contribute soon. Looking forward to seeing everyone else's there as well...

Some central Illinois autumn pictures. Not as colorful as New England, but cool nonetheless.

Great photos! I really like the ones of the barns, the first one especially. And the ones with your Z4 are cool too. Perfect weather to have the top down.:D
