Nice pictures...I'm just jealous...I have never seen a moose (except in your pictures).

It looks like you took them at far range...how close do you get before getting nervous?

The last one of the baby may be my favorite of all your moose shots (and that is certainly saying something). Awesome!!!

Another great shot. Do they stay with their mama for a while or do they seperate?. Thanks for sharing.

They are born in mid May to early June and they stay with mama through their first winter and into the next spring, and then mama usually pushes them off, but not always.

yesterday, July 15th...

These are great! I missed the last posting. You haven't named him yet? ;)

forestgnome
07-17-2009, 07:59 AM
Well...since you asked :o... his name is Kezossa, which means "fast" in Abanaki. Each time I see him he's running and sprinting in circles while mama watches, and once I saw her jog around with him a bit. He's hard to photograph because he won't stay still for long.

I spent six hours with them Monday morning. Here's mama dozing off. I beleive she was dreaming because she was twitching just as dogs do when they dream. Her eyes would open but the inner lid stayed closed and her hooves were twitching.

Incredable pictures as usual. In the first picture is that blood on the back of her left leg? Maye from ticks or something. Great job Patrick and thanks for sharing.

Great shots of Momma and her young one! You get the best photos of moose I have seen. The red things on her leg almost look like open sores.

forestgnome

Thanks again! Yes, they are open sores from flies.

Whoa...those ones with the mottled light and spotlit leaves are incredible. I might try that dodging and burning technique just a hair to reduce the strength of the shadows...but just whoa...what a shot!

forestgnome

Jim, I'll try that..the light is strong on those leaves..thanks much

....probably. I saw a mama and calf after sunset at a distance right where they have been spotted all last year, and he was the only calf spotted in the area all last year be myself or 2Alsces. ( we spent alot of time spotting moose)

Looking forward to positively IDing him, but it sure looks like he's made it through the all-important first winter :D:D:D

Hoping to see Big Daddy again as well, an annual rite of spring :D

happy spring :)
