Avalon Trail and Mt. Willard Trail, out-and-back.
3 miles.
I asked Hugh what he wanted to do for Father's Day, and he suggested a hike. We decided to do the hike a day early, since it looks like it's going to rain all day on Father's Day itself.
We decided to give Mt. Willard a go -- we drove to Crawford Notch, parked at the train depot, and went on our way.
We began on the Avalon Trail, then a short 0.1 mile later turned left onto the Mt. Willard Trail. The way up alternated easy pitches with moderate ones. It was a nice hike, just the right size and type for Sage.
We stopped on the way up to look at the Centennial Pool. Purrty.
More moderate pitches, then the path flattened out and we could see light in the distance...the end of the trail.
We emerged from the trees and stepped out onto ledges...and enjoyed the views!
Happy Father's Day, Papa!
I took a video of the views...
After many minutes munching trail mix, we decided to head on down. Just before we began our descent, we discovered the summit sign.
Down we went...going down is always so much easier than going up!
Alex stopped to say hi to a favorite trail creature.
On the way back, Sage decided to plow through a shallow stream crossing instead of rock-hopping it as she had done on the way up. I didn't care, since the crossing is less than 0.2 miles from the car. Halfway through, however, she changed her mind and wanted to be put on the rocks and taken out of the water...Alex came to the rescue.
We arrive back at the trailhead in fine shape, though some feet were wet. )
Happy Father's Day, folks!
