I was looking to the NNW from Sewell, NJ at 10:15PM tonight and I saw a very distinct and bright flash of light the size of a bright star with my naked eye. It was only there for a second but I know I witnessed something extremely rare. Does anyone have an idea of what I saw?

It may have been a Perseid meteor? I know they will peak on Aug 11/12th, but can be seen for about a week before and after. Here's some info.http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2009/31jul_perseids2009.htm And apparently, a filament of comet dust has drifted across Earth's path and when Earth passes through it, sometime between 0800 and 0900 UT (1 - 2 am PDT) on August 12th, the Perseid meteor rate could surge to twice its normal value,".

Kewl...this is next week. This article is a couple years old but the metoer shower will be the same. If the weather is good middle of next week would make a perfect camping trip just for the clean mountain skies.

Thanks Snow Miser

Thank you for the response, and the heads up on the Perseid, Snow Miser. I don't believe that is the case though. Imagine staring at the sky and seeing an intensely bright "stationary" white star for only a second. Like you, I've seen many meteors and satellites but I've never seen this event before.

Thanks again,

Brian

On the other hand it may have been related to the bright light on the webcam at the summit yesterday. What were you up to last night Ryan?

The ravines camera early in the morning showed a bright light on the summit. It really looked like car (or spaceship) headlights.

Another thought on the flash would be the setting sun reflecting off a shiny panel of a satellite.

Maybe Marty was working on a secret project?

Maybe it was an Iridium Flare? Did it look like this http://www.w7ftt.net/iridium1.html or this http://www.assa.org.au/observing/iridium/ ? A little more about them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_flare .

Then again, maybe Marty was working on some secret weather instrument that night:D
