I guess it is that time again to guess first snow fall of 2 inches or more on the rock pile. I say the first snowfall will be on Sept. 26. Let the guessing begin. Sept. is already here.

mtruman

I'm assuming that this means at least 2" in a single day as opposed to total accumulation. Based on that assumption I'll guess Oct 13.

(Last year it was Oct 21).

Through yesterday we are at 0.0 inches of snow for the whole month!

Knapper
09-30-2009, 06:37 PM
Just to clarify, "snow" on the F-6 is any freezing precipitation. This means sleet, snow grains, graupel, small/large hail, ice crystals, or ice pellets all count for the "snow and ice column". The "Snow/Ice on Ground at 0600" column includes all of these plus accumulations of rime or glaze. Just want to make sure that people are looking at the right columns and now what counts in those columns in case we only get a trace of snow but an inch of snow/ice on the ground.

Brad
09-30-2009, 10:19 PM
I am lookin at the right column. The one with amount of snow on the ground is a flakey number. The Observor could dump a whole bunch of snow on the ground and then measure it to equal his answer. Not very scientific. We use the snow & ice column.

So looking at the our synoptic data since yesterday, 0.7" of snow has fallen (trace yesterday night, 0.7" today). Does this count as an inch or does it have to be a pure 1.0"?

I don't remember exactly how it was applied, but I always thought there was a circumstance where you rounded snowfall to the nearest inch. There is a standard if anybody wants to dig through the WMO regulations.

Knapper
10-01-2009, 10:42 PM
Bill O, I am not second guessing MWO station policy. I was wondering if it counted as an inch for this forums guessing game. The station policy for measuring snowfall is to the nearest tenth of an inch as its been since the 1930's for the six (or 12 hour in the 30s) synoptic observation. For snow/ice/rime on the ground, it is rounded to the nearest inch or trace if less than 0.5 inch. I think that is what you are referring to.

Brad
10-02-2009, 06:59 AM
For the contests we have always used whatever the F6 says. Yesterday was 1.1 inches on the F6 and that is the best showing yet - but not 2.0" or better.

As we go marching down through the list of precise guesses in the contest.

No, no, no, that's not what I meant. I know you guys do everything correctly on the summit. I just knew there was something rounded to the nearest inch, and that must be it...snowfall on the ground.

For anyone else wondering, WMO is the World Meteorological Organization. They literally wrote the book on the guidelines used to observe the weather.

Congrats Mark! We should meet up there for a celebratory hike! My son is 10 today and he said it would snow on his b-day on the summit! Never question a 10year old!

Same to your Rich! The hike sounds like a great idea! Maybe not on Mt Washington with all the snow though . You picked your son's birthday and I picked our anniversary (30 this year). Looks like a lucky date for many reasons! Now all we have to do is collect our prizes. I think it was a winter Edu-trip, right? :) Oh, and Happy Birthday to your son.

Mark, I am sure you need lots more Edu and you are a trip. So, you must be right.
