View Full Version : Three Day Presidential Traverse, September 1,2,3, "Perfect"

This trip has eluded us the past few years. In September of 2006 after climbing to Madison Hut on The Madison Gulf Trail the next morning Hunter became ill and we had to decend. In July of 2007 we were in the middle of a Hut Traverse from Lonesome to Carter and Hunter broke his wrist coming over Garfield on The Garfield Ridge Trail in very wet conditions.

These were still wonder trips for different reasons but we had not completed the trip over the Presidentials until now.

This time we were rewarded with perfect conditions! 60 degrees, 5 mph breeze.

We went up the Valley Way to Madison Hut and then to the summit of Madison. Day two we set out on The Gulfside Trail to the summit of Adams (my favorite) by Lowe's Path. We continued toward Edmund's Col (great stretch of trail) and on to Jefferson. Hunter ran over the summit and I continued on The Gulfside. We reunited on Montecello Lawn for lunch.

Then it was on to Washington for the clearest weather I have ever experienced on the summit with a brutal 6 mile an hour breeze (58 degrees). Then down The Crawford Path to Lakes of The Clouds Hut (wonderful sunset).

Day Three we headed to Crawford Notch on The Crawford Path to finish the most perfect hike ever.

Fantastic Doug! Congrats to you and Hunter on getting back and doing this under such wonderful conditions. I knew that you guys had trouble on Garfield Ridge in '07 but hadn't realized that Hunter actually broke his wrist. No wonder he disliked that trail so much! Thanks for sharing the awesome photos and TR and letting us come along for the ride!

Thank you all for the encouraging comments.

This was a special trip for us.

To be a parent and to be able to have an adventure like this with your son means the world to me. It is certainly something that we will always remember. I am very fortunate and Hunter is becoming quite the knowledgable hiker. He will lead many trips as he gets older.

I must also pass on my apologies to J. Rayner Edmands.

I misspelled his last name in my post. This is unacceptable.

Therefore, I would like to thank Mr. Edmands for all of that trail building that makes it such a pleasure to hike these mountains. Truely amazing!

Thank you again.

Edmands Col:

Thank you again J. Rayner Edmands.

Always rising but never steeply.

Thank you for the nice comments.

Also, congratulations to you and Alex on joining The Four Thousand Footer Club!!

I enjoyed following your quest. You both should be proud of this special accomplishment and the manner in which you achieved it.

You and the girls have the Presidential Traverse to look forward to. I'm sure that will happen before you know it.
