View Full Version : Mt. Washington photos from last year.

Hi everyone, I just joined the forum and thought I'd post a few photos I took on my wife and my first (and second) hikes up Mt. Washington last year.

The first day, we made it all the way to the head wall of Huntington Ravine just in time for thick clouds to roll up the ravine and soak the rocks. Not feeling comfortable making the last bit of the climb on slick rocks, we turned around and descended. Here's an unfinished panorama I took from lower down on the boulder field:

We went out to dinner that night, sore and tired, but determined to try again the following day. The weather the second day was better but there were still a lot of low clouds passing over the mountain. We didn't want to risk another failure so close to the top, so we decided to take an easier route up Lion's Head. This was taken from Lion's Head, looking out over Tuckerman Ravine at Boott Spur.

We made the summit, and enjoyed a nice cup of hot chocolate while we watched clouds whip over the summit riding 80 mph winds! This is from our descent, looking out over Tuckerman Ravine from Davis Path:

We descended by way of Glen Boulder for an approximate 10 mile round trip, the last :30 to :45 minutes in the dark, returning to Pinkham Notch at around 8:00.

We plan to return next year twice, once to do Huntington Ravine (hopefully successfully) and a second time with our son, probably up Boott Spur and down Lion's Head.

Hope you enjoy the photos...

Chris, welcome to the MWO Forums . . . and WOW what splendid photos. They really put you right there! Having been to these same locations, I can say that your photos accurately reflect the stunning views . . . there's no "photo trickery"!!

Thanks for the welcome and the comments on the photos, everyone. The trip was great, and despite the rain that prevented us from climbing Huntington, we wouldn't change a thing. The weather really cooperated on the second day, we had great views as the clouds would skim the top of the mountain, engulfing us in white one minute and revealing deep blue skies the next.

At the summit, the wind was blowing so much sand around (ouch!) that the observation deck was completely deserted most of the time:

We had actually intended to descend on Boott Spur, but I... ahem... misread a trail sign and didn't catch the mistake until the Glen Boulder trail. But my wife had hiked to Mt. Isolation along that path earlier in the year in dense fog and didn't see anything, so she got to see all the views she missed on that hike. I think we were the only two on that trail late that day, and it was really humbling to be alone in such a big place as the sun was beginning to set.

Anyway, thanks again and yea, we're definitely looking forward to many more adventures in the years to come, especially with our new hiking buddy!
