This is the best Mt Washington rescue story. My friend who paticipated as one of the helicopter crew lent me the article out of a 1982 Yankee magazine and I put it into this short e-book. It was also in Time magazine.
Its only 17 short pages and will take a half hour or so to read.

It included members of the AMC, MRS, Fish and Game, and many volunteers.

 In the end, One rescue volunteer was dead and two lost hikers, mamed for life.

Wow, what a story.

One one hand it makes me 'angry' that people are so arrogant to go ahead and attempt a climb in such weather. On the other hand, it is a good story of the human will to survive and rescue those in trouble.

Very interesting reading. There are so many stories about hiking in the Whites - most of them turned out well. But, some are good lessons for us all.

If you'd like to know more about this story -- in much more detail -- then I'd recommend reading the book Second Ascent by Alison Osius.

And that will be the extent of my comments...

Good story. It does remind us to be prepared with regard to having the proper equipment and knowledge of the area one is going to hike in.

I am currently reading "Off The Wall" A collection of Yosemite rescues and deaths. I wish I had read it before before going to yosemite this past fall.
This rescue story was like reading a chapter in this book. We all learn from others mistakes (I HOPE). If your interested in some spectaclur stories from simple to stupid mistakes that get well trained people killed, and if you want some great beta for the mind and soul put this book on your winter reading list.
I had my 15 year old read the first chapter all about slipping around waterfalls!!! priceless. This book will make you think rather than hope or ignore. It goes into great detail from the SAR members reports and reveals root causes of all the accidents.
Be safe and most of all enjoy life.

Very true. The goodness of people is always at it's highest when other folks are in grave danger. I love these stories.

What a brilliant story, I agree that it is funny how some people think that they can do anything...
