View Full Version : Contest: First cog

Brad
03-26-2010, 08:00 PM
Let's start off a new contest. Guess the date when we will see the first cog in the North web camera archive images going either up or down.

Remember the images are every 15 minutes and we could miss all of them on a specific date.

Rules:

- We must see a part of the cog in the image. Smoke is not sufficient.

- Entries can be made starting now.

- All entries must be made and dated by this forum to be no later than 11:59 PM on Sunday, March 28th.

- Employees of the Cog company are not allowed to win. They may enter if they wish.

- If a date has been selected by more than one person, only the first entry will be valid.

- Once a guessed date has passed, that entry is no longer valid.

- If the actual date is not guessed, then the person who guesses the next calendar date is the winner.

- The winner will receive a hearty round of applause from all participants and lurkers.

Since there are only 7 people in the contest and most readers don't visit the forums until they are at work on a Monday morning maybe it should stay open a little longer. The 1st of April would be a good day...or maybe after the holiday weekend. It's not my contest, I'm just sayin'.

No cog today I can confirm that. Their first projected trek with people is May 1. Rumor has it they has started repairs on the bottom of tracks and are working upward. There is still a lot of snow on some sections up here so they will probably wait until after the 21st to start work up here to give it a bit more time to thaw since they usually wait til about two weeks prior to opening. But we will see. If the weather returns to what its been, they might start earlier.

Just think about the way this contest is structured. It could be July before we see a Cog in the North camera image. It is not a question of when they are running. We have to hit the timing right on the quarter hour. It will be interesting.

There are several hikers heading across the patch of snow in this picture.

While the weather will be a key factor for this race since fog makes it hard to see a train but did any even look at the cog schedule? They are only running weekends until the 29th, so that makes most of these dates impossible from the get go. And worker trains won't be doing too much work up here until the ties thaw enought to work on them. And no worries about missing one today, we had 0 trains arrive on the summit. So the 15th at ~1130 am is the next best shot but looking at long term models...

Well, 5/10 is wrapping up and so far it looks like billysinc got called for icing. The North camera has been iced over all day. So, if a Cog went by, we would never know.

Based on the rules, the next 3 days belong to Chris.

Brad

It is amazing how quickly the North camera image cleared up. At 4:00 PM it was all iced over. 4:15 PM and we had a clear view of the cog tracks. But, no cog train.

It looks like Chris got skunked even if he had 3 days in a row to pull through.

But, there was one image that showed a vehicle on the Auto Road.

I may be skunked too. I just checked the Cog's schedule, and unless a work train goes up, the earliest one will be tomorrow at 11am.

You're also going to be in the clouds through Saturday so it doesn't matter if the cog runs or not.

It now turns out Charlie and I are planning on driving up the Auto Road on Monday as far as we can go - and that is my date. So, if I can get the cog to stop right at the correct spot where the camera can see it . . .

Or we got to the end of Thursday and we are all skunked again.

Hi Brad -
Good luck with stopping the Cog in the right place/at the right time on Monday. Hope you and Charlie have a great time, no matter how far up the road you get :).
Sorry about this but, I think there might be an ACT III coming soon to a forum near you and me (perhaps this forum ), or we'll all have to admit the Fog, Clouds, Iced up North View window and Cog stumped us all.

Charlie

I'm out. It was too cloudy to see a train even if one did go up. Good luck to everyone else. Brad and Charlie, I hope you can hold up one on Monday long enough for the webcam to take a shot.:D

Good luck Brad and Charlie.

If you do get to stop the train Charlie just don't scare them with that bandana over your face. They may think they're being hijacked!!!:D

Ok - assuming Act II is a skunk session, let's start picking our dates for ACT III. Selections (notice I do not say guesses) must be in by 9:00 PM EDT Tuesday. Act II remaining dates are still valid. So, ACT III dates MUST start after ACT II dates with the first possible Act III date being May 21st.

It is too bad Charlie will be too busy tomorrow to enjoy his victory - if it happens. He will be cooking ribs for our Dock Party lunch. He is driving up from PA now and Chris B from South Dartmouth, Mass will meet up with him. They are coming to join in on the fun of us putting the docks in to kick off the summer.

You can join and watch by checking out the lake web camera at http://longlake.homeip.net:8003 - but, you must use Internet Explorer. Accept the ActiveX controls that get downloaded off the camera. The party is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM EDT Sunday.

On the web camera at the upper right are 4 icons side by side. The 2nd from the right looks like a rose - sort of, Click on it and a navigation window pops up. Click Presets and a set of presets are available. You can move the camera left, right, up, down and zoom in & out. Just don't fight over it kids.

The Dock Party will start at 9:00 AM EDT and the activity (if one can call it that) will be off to the right. Once that dock is in, then we shift to the far left to the neighbor's dock. Then we eat Charlie's ribs and home made french bread, and. . .

Well, it has almost been a year since I won it. But, Subaru could not make enough Outbacks last year to meet the demand. Then they added Cash For Clunkers on top of that and people wanted to get more Outbacks. So, I got MWO-STP Suby at the end of December.

I have been planning on getting to the summit for photos once the road opens up.
