Without doubt the best fundraiser I ever participated in. So well organized, populated with such nice people. A very, very memorable event. A week off then it's time for me to prepare for STP 2011. Here is a link to my Facebook Album.

I hiked through Tucks early in the morning, and found the fog a nice compliment to the wildflowers on the headwall. I didn't have my wide lens with me, and hope to go back after the next rainstorm!

Hey, Brad,

Such timing on the photo of us volunteers! That is me, Sharon, on the left, with my knee on the chair. I am talking to former observer Jim Salge's parents!

I didn't get to hike this year, but volunteering for two days gave me a different look at STP.

On to STP 11!

Thanks for the compliments on the pictures and fundraising. As many of you know, I have a good time doing what I do for the Obs - volunteering, photography, and the fundraising. The fact that I am kind of competitive by nature helps with the fundraising - I just keep going, and going, and see where I end up... :-)

Finally finished editing my pics from the trip! Uploaded several sets to Flickr (and they are on my Facebook if you are linked in over there.)

Upon arriving Wednesday morning, we checked into the Highland Center for the night, grabbed our packs and headed up Crawford Path to Mount Pierce. Once we got to the summit, thunderstorms could be heard in the distance, so we made quick work of getting back down. Made it to about 10 min from the Highland Center before the mountain spirits couldn't hold off the storms any longer for us.

On the drive up, Graham found a nice short, low impact hike that sounded interesting. So Thursday we headed over the state line into Maine to tackle Blueberry Mountain. One the way there, we stopped to check out the cool suspension bridge and spend some time playing in the water.

With the weather looking iffy for Saturday's big hike, the Talbots talked Graham and me into hiking with them on Friday. Having to turn back last year, I was really hoping for a summit this year. The window looked great for weather on Friday, so we got our packs ready and headed out the next morning. We were rewarded with near perfect weather, little traffic on the trails and long views. Wow I finally had a chance to go to Amerikilts web site and their pricing is half the price of an Utilikilt. $98.00 compared to $189.00. I might be in the need for another kilt :-). And they have one for my 4 year old Nephew for $22.00. He wants to wear one for hiking also. Thanks for the lead Dave.

Great Photos, Living in New England my whole life and never been to the Mountain. Will have to go with in the year, when is the best time to go?

Thanks,
Mark
Mark, are you thinking of hiking - or driving up? Most folks hike between the end of June and Labor Day. Before that the trails are very wet and slippery with snow melting. After Labor Day the winds pick up and it gets cold. But, general rules do not work on Mt Washington. You can get snow any time of the year and September and the beginning of October can give us wonderful hiking days (though they are shorter).

So, the real answer is July and August is the main hiking season. You still have to watch the weather. If you read the book "Not Without Peril" there is a list in the back of folks who have died on the mountain and many are in July and August. In most cases they were not prepared for the weather conditions.
