View Full Version : December snow contest

It is time to define and start the precise guessing for December Snow Contest 2010.

Last year in December the summit recorded 48.1 inches of snow for the whole month of December. This can be found off the Weather section of the MWO web site in the F6 report for December 2009. How much snow will be recorded on the F6 for December 2010? This is the contest. Guess/select/divine the correct amount of snow in December and you will be declared the winner of the best last contest of 2010.

There are some rules (of course):

The winner will be the person who has the closest guess to the amount of snow reported for December 2010 in the monthly F6 report.
It does not matter if the closest guess is under or over the actual amount. The closest wins.
Guess must be made to the tenth of an inch. Greater precision is a waste of time since you have no idea what you are doing anyway.
Any contestant building a wind machine next to or close to the precip can at the summit in an attempt to prevent snowflakes from staying in the can, will be disqualified
Any attempt to heat the precip can will force the Night Observer to kick you off the mountain. This holds true if you attempt to scoop snow out of the precip can.
If two guesses are the same amount off from the actual amount (like, one is 0.5" over and the other is 0.5" under), then the guess which was entered first into the forum wins.
Once an amount (to the closest tenth of an inch) has been taken, no other person can try to sleighride on that guess. One person per measurement, please.
You may make one guess and any subsequent guesses and whining will be ignored
All guesses must be made by 12:34.56 PM November 30th, 2010. Any guesses after that will be declared interesting - but, will be ignored.
The person who attempted to move the mountain for the First Snow Contest is not allowed to enter in this one - even though they were not successful.

The winner - drum roll - will get a prize. Yes, a real thing to savor. To honor and recognize a new Mt Washington Observatory partner, I will donate a 1/2 pound box of Van Otis Chocolates "Soft & Creamy Centers" to the winner.

From http://www.vanotischocolates.com

"1007 - Soft & Creamy Centers
An assortment designed for all of you that just like chocolates with a soft center. (You won't have to press the bottom to find them in this assortment) You'll find a delicious variety of our cremes, jellies and other favorites here."

Go for it folks! The race is on and the games have been declared open. Go for the chocolates - and check out their web site for possible holiday gift ideas.

One might ask - why were the "Soft & Creamy Centers" selected for the grand prize? You all are a bunch of softies - and great supporters of the Mount Washington Observatory. Thanks - and may the best softy win.

Yes, I will be providing updates as I am sure others will too. The Monthly F6 reports can be found at http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/f6/ The column we are interested in for this contest is the one titled "Snow & Ice" which for Dec 1st has 0.6". Yes, friends in the London area have been slammed with snow and they do not know how to deal with it. But, others in the southwest have gotten nothing. Have not heard from others up in the Lake District - they might be snowed in. :-) And we are here in Maine with no snow.

Lets see how Bill O is really doing.

The current F6 says 21.1 inches of snow so far this month. 21.1 - 12.0 puts Bill O 9.1 inches away right now.

Billysinc guessed 37.0. So, 37.0 - 21.1 = 15.9 inches away. Bill O is still in the lead - but I would not call it comfortable.

You have hit on one of the key objectives of these contests (at least in my opinion). We are getting a better appreciation for what the weather is on the summit, learning about the F6 reporting, having fun, and have a reason from coming back to visit the MWO web site on a regular basis. Do we have good security on the F6 report to make sure none of these nice folks do not get into the site and alter it. The prize must be very attractive to them all. 9 days left this month to be reported.

I'm optimistic,it's still going to be 55.1,but I'm not worried about winning the chocolate anymore.
A very thoughtful someone already sent us some.They know who they are.:cool:

We are closing in on billysinc and the big snow storm is about to hit tonight. Maybe we need to swing the deck web camera a bit to the right so we can see the precip can and make sure no one is adding to it.

Adding to the can? I'm firing up a giant fan trying to blow this thing out to sea.

That's just wrong to say BB. The F6 report is made up of statistical findings, nobody would touch the can, and with 100mph winds coming the can will only fill up to reach 12.2. Add that to the 33.6 and we have a potential winner :cool:

I'm going now to play in the snow or shovel out the front of my house, we're getting pretty heavy snow. NEED GOGGLES!!!

The current F6 report is at 42.4 so, unless some Christmas magic happens again there's no way I can win. If tomorrow's F6 report shows zero precipitation, then I will throw in the Snowwhite towel and cede to the winner.

Can anyone tell me what column on the F6 report is column 16. % poss or skycover. I'm trying to understand the symbols used in column 16.

Karen, I believe the answer is - for any given day there are a certain number of daylight minutes possible - from sunrise to sunset. Column 15 is the number of minutes of actual sunlight - not overcast. So, column 16 is the actual sunlight minutes (col 15) divided by the total possible daylight minutes for that specific day.

Now, I am not sure how they define actual sunlight minutes. Is it based on visibility or cloud cover being less than a certain amount?

Brad,
If what you said is true, then I understand the F6 report even less now. How and where does "0" come from as it relates to the symbols used below (i.e. 70, 100 or 30)

SYMBOLS USED IN COLUMN 16
1 = FOG
2 = FOG REDUCING VISIBILITY
TO 1/4 MILE OR LESS
3 = THUNDER
4 = ICE PELLETS
5 = HAIL
6 = GLAZE OR RIME
7 = BLOWING DUST OR SAND
RED. VIS. TO 1/2 MILE OR LESS
8 = SMOKE OR HAZE
9 = BLOWING SNOW
X = TORNADO

Still wondering what the header for column 16 is actually labeled

Brad

Nope - I confused you. I looked at the 16th column and not the 16th column of data. The first column is the day of the month.

In any case the title of that column says it is the amount of sky covered in tenths. So, the numbers can go from 0 to 10. The note underneath that you pasted does not seem to go with that column at all.

We are sitting with 42.4 inches of snow for December and one more day to go. The summit looks like it is in the clouds. Is it snow? What will today bring us?

Actually, not exactly. If it were 42.2 inches you would have won. At 42.3 inches he would have won. So, you lost by 2 tenths of an inch.

Wow - you are right that the data for the 31st has not been entered yet. Maybe that can get done tonight and we can see if we need a recount or check for blowing chads.
