?How about a couple of Rattlesnakes?:D; that?s what we said to each other as we looked at the dark dreary sky out the windows of the Sunny Day Diner. Soon we were on our way to the Holderness Area just off of Route 113.

We stopped at the Squam Lake covered bridge to capture the rich colors of the distressed wood.

Both parking lots at the trail heads were full of vehicles; seems like other people had the same idea.
We donned our raingear and headed up the trail to West Rattlesnake Mountain, leaving our lumbar packs in the van. We were impressed with trail construction and the use of natural materials to maintain the integrity of the pathway.

Although the drizzly and foggy conditions hindered our views of distance summits, we still were able to see Squam Lake and nearby Red Hill.

There were still many trees showing their fall colors.

We made the most of a rainy day.

Another nice trail report and set of pics Mike and Donna! It certainly looks like you are enjoying your vacation. Thanks for bringing us along. :)

I agree with Bob...another nice trail report.

The Rattlesnakes seem really popular. A weekend doesn't go by that the parking areas aren't overflowing. I will need to add it to my list.

Sometimes the drizzly/foggy weather gives the landscape a unique perspective. Love the picture of the stairway and the bridge. Love the bench marker too. Thanks for sharing.

BOB, KARL, CHARLIE and ANNA: Thanks again! We began hiking the Squam Lakes area last fall and wanted to go back again on this trip. It's a perfect hike for great views without a lot of effort. Rainy days often do make for better photographs too.

This is definitely a nice hike - even on a less than perfect weather day. I agree with you Donna - photos on this kind of day are often better and certainly can be more interesting (as yours clearly show).

On a nicer day you can turn this into a quite a bit longer (and more strenuous) trip by taking the trail from West Rattlesnake down to Five Finger Point (really nice walk along the shore) and then back up to the col and looping over East.

Thanks, Mark. We want to check out some more hikes in the area down the road. Nice suggestion about the Five Finger Points hike.
